Demotech, Inc. Urges Continued Support for Insurance Trade Organizations

Demotech, Inc., a financial analysis firm based in Columbus, Ohio, has recently highlighted the importance of trade organizations in the insurance sector during what many consider a critical budgeting month. As organizations evaluate their financial strategies for the upcoming year, Demotech is encouraging insurers and members of trade associations to retain their memberships.

Joseph L. Petrelli, President and Co-founder of Demotech, expressed that the period from 2017 to 2026 may be viewed as the ‘Lost Decade’ for the insurance industry. He pointed out that various online tactics have significantly transformed how claims are processed. According to Petrelli, insurers have increasingly found themselves facing what he refers to as “tech-enabled litigation instigation.” This approach involves using advanced online marketing strategies, including artificial intelligence, to convert policyholder claims into contested litigations, essentially weaponizing technology against the very insurers meant to provide coverage.

Petrelli elaborated on the perils facing the industry, stating, “Our internal reviews and subsequent research have revealed that, starting around 2015, the insurance sector and financially robust entities within it have become targets for these covert operations.” He emphasized the role of sophisticated advertising and litigation marketing firms, sometimes backed by outside investors, in this changing landscape. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, these tactics have only become more potent, putting further strain on insurers’ reputations and financial stability.

To combat this evolving threat, Petrelli asserts that the collective efforts of trade organizations are vital. Specifically, those associations which focus on preserving industry reputation or tackling fraud are crucial for regaining trust and attracting new talent. He stated, “Your membership and dues are more critical today than ever before, especially as the industry faces unprecedented challenges.”

Sharon Romano Petrelli, also a co-founder of Demotech, echoed these sentiments, stressing the significant financial resources that opposing parties are accumulating. With billions in funding directed not only at proliferating litigation but also at redefining the legal profession through various innovative structures, the pressure on the insurance industry has never been greater. She called for an introspective look at budgeting decisions related to trade associations, making it clear that cutting such support can have detrimental consequences for the broader industry’s future.

Trade associations are essential to fostering better futures for the sector. In the face of growing adversarial forces, it is imperative for industry participants to thoughtfully consider their ongoing support for these organizations.
