Bybit Pay Launches in South Africa, Transforming Crypto Payment Landscape with MoneyBadger Integration

Bybit Pay Expands to South Africa: A New Era for Crypto Payments

In a significant development for the cryptocurrency ecosystem, Bybit, ranked as the world's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has officially launched its payment solution, Bybit Pay, in South Africa. This rollout is facilitated through a partnership with MoneyBadger, a local innovation that specializes in crypto payment integrations. Through this collaboration, Bybit Pay aims to revolutionize the way South Africans make everyday transactions using digital funds.

A Growing Market for Cryptocurrency

South Africa is emerging as one of Africa's most vibrant digital asset markets, with an impressive estimated cryptocurrency ownership rate of 9.44%. This represents roughly 5.8 million individuals, making it a lucrative ground for crypto services. Furthermore, about 52% of these holders are already utilizing cryptocurrency for purchases, indicating a growing acceptance and integration of digital assets into everyday life.

The integration with MoneyBadger allows users of Bybit Pay to easily conduct transactions by simply scanning QR codes or making online payments at participating merchants. The service caters to various spending categories, including groceries, fuel, retail shopping, dining, and travel. Users can pay using Bitcoin, stablecoins, or any of over 20 supported digital currencies.

Streamlined Payment Infrastructure

Bybit Pay is designed to leverage existing payment infrastructures through its collaboration with MoneyBadger and several established South African payment networks. Users can access a vast array of merchant locations — over 650,000 spots through the Scan to Pay system, around 31,000 via Zapper, and more than 1,500 Pick n Pay stores. Online transactions will also be supported through partnerships with Peach and Ozow, covering 120 and over 440 merchants, respectively.

Bybit Pay's integration is noteworthy for its ability to convert cryptocurrency to South African Rand in real-time at the point of sale. This not only minimizes the risk of price fluctuations but also allows merchants to conduct their business without needing to hold cryptocurrency or invest in new payment systems.

For in-store payments, users can use the Bybit app to navigate to Bybit Pay, scan the merchant QR code, and confirm the transaction within seconds. When shopping online, customers will be able to select cryptocurrency as their payment method, with payment limits ranging between $0.06 to $2,500 per transaction, ensuring a swift and hassle-free process.

Enhancing Local Adoption of Crypto Payments

In light of its potential to facilitate widespread crypto adoption, Bybit Pay is seen as a crucial step forward. South Africa consistently ranks among the top countries for cryptocurrency usage, and the World Crypto Rankings 2025 report highlights that markets exhibiting strong performance are those where crypto is actively utilized for different kinds of payments.

Sophie Chen, Head of Marketing for Bybit Card and Bybit Pay, emphasized the new paradigm emerging within the crypto landscape, stating, “Crypto payments are entering a new phase where the focus is shifting from trading to real-world utility.” By establishing connections between digital currencies and everyday commerce through strategic partnerships, Bybit Pay aims to enhance user experiences and accessibility across the region.

Carel van Wyk, CEO of MoneyBadger, shared enthusiasm about the partnership, noting, “By enabling Bybit Pay across our network, millions of users can now spend crypto at everyday merchants while ensuring settlements continue in Rand.” This collaborative effort is designed to not only encourage first-time users but also foster repeat transactions, solidifying the role of cryptocurrency in daily financial activities within South Africa.

Looking Ahead

As Bybit aims to serve its growing base of over 80 million users worldwide, this expansion into South Africa signifies its commitment to tapping into new markets while promoting the adoption of cryptocurrencies in real-world applications. The future of digital currency is increasingly leaning toward practical uses in everyday life, and Bybit Pay’s launch in South Africa marks an exciting chapter in the evolution of global cryptocurrency payments.
