Morphy's Dec 10-13 Auction: A Collector's Paradise
From December 10 to 13, 2024, firearms enthusiasts and history aficionados will converge at Morphy's Pennsylvania gallery for an extraordinary four-day auction event. Titled after
The Art of War in America, 1750-1850, the auction focuses on the impressive James L. Kochan Study Collection, which highlights American military history. With an array of legacy firearms and militaria, this anticipated gathering promises to cater to a varied audience, from seasoned collectors to curious newcomers.
The event kicks off on December 10, showcasing
The James L Kochan Study Collection, featuring museum-quality artifacts from the colonial and revolutionary eras. Among the highlights is a remarkable fusil belonging to Benjamin Hurd Jr., an activist and merchant from Charlestown, Massachusetts, inscribed with “Benja Hurd jr 1775.” This piece is a testament to the revolutionary spirit, having been passed down through the Hurd family until its recent acquisition by the Kochan collection. Its estimated value ranges between $30,000 to $50,000.
Another captivating lot includes an extremely rare bronze cannon, a 4-pounder model from the Gribeauval System, produced in 1765—just before the turmoil of the French Revolution impacted its counterparts. With its original craftsmanship intact, this cannon is recognized as one of only two surviving examples in its caliber, estimated to fetch $80,000 to $120,000.
As the auction continues into the subsequent days, the focus will shift to a diverse range of antique, vintage, and modern firearms. Among the standout items is a unique early 1960s gold-plated Colt AR-15 machine gun, presented to General Earle G. Wheeler, who played a significant role in the rifle’s historical adoption. The auction estimates this stunning piece at $100,000 to $200,000. Complete with its factory finish and display rack, this rare weapon is sure to draw serious bids.
Collectors will also have the opportunity to bid on two iconic World War II machine guns. A German machine gun crafted by C.G. Haenel is expected to sell for $40,000 to $80,000, while a matching Nagoya arsenal Type 99 7.7mm is estimated between $15,000 and $25,000. Further adding to the auction's allure is a classic Winchester 1873 .44-40 lever-action rifle linked to Chief Rain-in-the-Face, valued at $60,000 to $90,000. This weapon carries with it tales of the Wild West and the tumultuous events of Custer’s Last Stand.
For four days, Morphy Auctions will offer an unmissable opportunity for bidding both live and via the internet through its platform, Morphy Live. Each day's auction will commence at 9:00 AM EST, inviting serious bidders to ready their paddles for an exciting showdown.
As the season of giving draws near, history lovers and firearms collectors alike can look forward to acquiring remarkable pieces of history, making this auction not just an event, but a celebration of American heritage.
