In an ambitious stride towards future urban mobility, Tokyo has officially embarked on a pioneering project targeted at integrating flying cars into its transportation framework. Three leading companies — Mitsubishi Estate, Kanematsu Corporation, and SkyDrive Inc. — have initiated a five-day flight demonstration at Tokyo Big Sight from February 24 to February 28, 2026. This initiative is part of a subsidy project approved by the Tokyo metropolitan government in June 2025, aiming to create a viable business model for flying car services.

The primary aim of this demonstration was to evaluate operational challenges associated with the practical use of flying vehicles in urban settings and to showcase the advancements in passenger terminal operations using the Vertiport Automation System (VAS). This groundbreaking project is recognized as the first of its kind in Japan, directly assessing the implementation of flying cars into society.

The Vertiport Automation System


The Vertiport Automation System plays a critical role in optimizing and automating the operations of flying car takeoff and landing stations. It enhances safety by ensuring seamless management of air traffic, monitor surrounding airspace, and managing resources digitally, thereby facilitating a smooth passenger experience through check-ins and customer management. Ultimately, it aims to establish a safe and frequent operation of flying vehicles, ushering in a new era of transportation.

Terminal Operation Validation


During the demonstration, the project also offered opportunities for public trials, allowing participants to experience various pre-flight procedures such as facial recognition check-ins and security checks. The feedback gathered from these experiences will be crucial in refining the convenience and operational aspects of future implementations. Notably, the test flights utilized a domestically produced flying car for the first time in Tokyo, which was operated remotely.

To bolster public understanding and acceptance of flying vehicles as a mode of transportation, open house events were concurrently held during the demonstration period. Over 1,500 attendees, including dignitaries and media representatives, were present to witness the flying operations and examine the management facilities up close.

Continued Collaborations for Future Mobility


Looking ahead, the three companies involved have committed to further exploring the integration of flying mobility services into society. They aim to address the operational challenges identified during the trials and enhance the safety and efficiency of flying cars.

Details of the Demonstration Flights


The demonstration included operational validation for passenger terminal procedures, conducted in collaboration with Skyports Ltd., a company specializing in the establishment and operation of vertiports internationally. A new terminal equipped with the VAS was constructed for this project, where individuals could undergo the entire check-in processes and security scanning using a facial recognition system. The design included a gallery area for exhibitions related to flying cars, a deck for waiting passengers, and an operation room to ensure the efficient functioning of the vertiport.

Flight Testing Information

A standout feature of the demonstration was the flight of SkyDrive's model SD-05. The specifications of this vehicle include seating for a pilot and two passengers, a maximum takeoff weight of 1,400 kg, and an operational design that is aimed at reaching speeds close to 100 km/h. The first test flight covered approximately 150 meters at an altitude of 13 meters, showcasing its capabilities in a brief 3.5-minute flight.
