Recent findings from Parks Associates indicate that individuals residing in apartments are engaging with digital content at rates noticeably exceeding those living in single-family homes (SFH) or condominiums. This trend is attributed primarily to the increased usage of smartphones and gaming consoles among apartment dwellers. The research, titled "Managed Wi-Fi MDU Resident Demand Preferences," surveyed 8,000 U.S. households and focused on the demand for advanced internet services across multifamily properties.

According to the study, 17% of apartment residents utilize gaming consoles daily, whereas only 12% of single-family home residents and 7% of condo residents do the same. This significant difference highlights a shift in entertainment preferences and usage patterns within urban living spaces. Kristen Hanich, the Director of Research at Parks Associates, elaborated on the findings: "Apartment residents report spending more hours each week playing online games, streaming music, and watching online video compared to condo and SFH residents."

Conversely, residents of single-family homes and condos tend to rely more on computers, primarily due to their work-from-home arrangements. This contrast suggests that residents in multifamily units have distinct lifestyle needs that may require tailored internet solutions. As properties phase out outdated free Wi-Fi services, there is a noticeable rise in resident satisfaction with the introduction of premium internet options. Many of the legacy systems, once appreciated, are now seen as akin to public café Wi-Fi, which can be unreliable and invasive. Consumers face difficulties logging into these systems, particularly when connecting various Internet of Things (IoT) devices that lack a traditional browser interface.

In response to these concerns, multifamily property owners are increasingly investing in comprehensive managed Wi-Fi solutions. This transition is showing promise as it aligns better with the demands of today’s tech-savvy residents.
