Kyoto's Journey Towards Carbon Neutrality: Community Efforts with 'SPOBY' App

Kyoto's Journey Towards Carbon Neutrality: Community Efforts with 'SPOBY'

In the heart of Kyoto, a remarkable initiative is set to change the way residents think about their daily choices concerning carbon emissions. The 'SPOBY' app, developed by Studio Spoby based in Tokyo, aims to quantify and visualize individual actions for carbon reduction. Beginning May 20, 2025, the project named 'Carbon Neutral Ekiden Kyoto' will engage citizens and businesses in promoting environmentally conscious lifestyles throughout the city.

Rooted Actions for Community Carbon Reduction

Kyoto, renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and rich historical heritage, is not only a cultural icon but also the birthplace of the Kyoto Protocol, a significant international agreement for environmental conservation. Leveraging this backdrop, the 'Carbon Neutral Ekiden' project encourages local citizens to adopt various eco-friendly practices such as walking, cycling, and using reusable bottles. By recording these daily carbon-reducing actions through the SPOBY app, participants can accumulate 'carbon neutrality points' which can later be exchanged for goods and services from local businesses.

This initiative aims to empower residents to engage actively and joyfully in carbon-reduction activities. Future plans include expanding participation to cover a wider range of local actions, like using public transportation and supporting local products. The aim is to create a fun, engaging environment where citizens can contribute to the area’s sustainability efforts.

Collaborating Towards a Carbon-Neutral Society

Previously launched in urban areas like Osaka, Hyogo, Aichi, and Fukuoka, the Carbon Neutral Ekiden has made significant strides in reducing CO2 emissions, enhancing community health, and boosting local economies. In Kyoto, the project will showcase events where participants can explore the city’s historic streets while enjoying refreshments from local hydration stations. This blend of enjoying the city and participating in carbon-reduction activities is a hallmark of Kyoto’s unique approach to environmental action.

Anyone residing or commuting to Kyoto can participate in this project via the SPOBY app, and it is expected that the cumulative impact of individual actions will significantly reduce the region’s overall CO2 emissions. Additionally, this initiative seeks to elevate the community's environmental consciousness and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Upcoming Event: Carbon Neutral Ekiden Promotion

On June 8, 2025, 'KYOTO URBAN SPORTS DAY' will take place at the Kyoto Research Park, featuring the 'Carbon Neutral Ekiden Kyoto' promotional booth. This event will bring together top athletes, including Olympians and performers from Cirque du Soleil, to offer free experiences and battle events encompassing urban sports like double dutch, breakdancing, 3x3 basketball, and skateboarding. As residents participate, they will also earn rewards that encourage continued engagement, contributing to the lively atmosphere of the community.
