IPID Secures $16M Funding to Enhance Payment Intelligence and Security

Recently, IPID, a rising player in the payment intelligence sector, announced a successful Series A fundraising round, bringing in $16 million led by Foundation Capital. Prominent financial institutions, including Citi and HSBC, also participated in this significant funding effort, which aims to bolster the company's capabilities in fraud prevention and payment decision-making.

As digital payment systems become faster and more automated, there is an increasing need for reliable validation processes regarding who is receiving these payments. Despite advancements, institutions often find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to verifying recipient identities and assessing associated risks. The onus frequently lies on the sender to confirm the recipient, making them vulnerable to potentially fraudulent activities. According to estimates by LSEG, Authorized Push Payment fraud is projected to lead to a staggering $331 billion in global losses by 2027.

Founded on the principles of transparency and trust, IPID specializes in bank account verification across more than 50 countries and has quickly established itself as a leading provider of payment intelligence solutions. In light of this investment, the company is set to expand its services into the U.S. payments market and digital asset sector. This evolution will empower institutions with crucial information before transactions are finalized, effectively reducing the risk of fraud.

"Every payment starts with a decision, but institutions often make these decisions using incomplete information," stated IPID's co-founder and CEO, Damien Dugauquier. "Initially, we focused on global bank account verification. Now, we are broadening our scope to provide vital decision intelligence that supports informed choices across various countries and payment methods. Our goal is not simply to enable quicker money transfers but to ensure that these transactions are backed by solid data and informed reasoning."

The commentary from Zach Noorani, Partner at Foundation Capital, further highlights the importance of IPID's role in the financial ecosystem. "IPID has swiftly evolved into the benchmark for bank account verification and intelligence. Achieving such status without relying on a bank consortium positions IPID uniquely to assist financial players globally in combating fraud and enhancing payment efficiency," he noted.

As instant payments gain momentum, with new rails emerging and artificial intelligence becoming instrumental in transaction initiation, the fragmented nature of necessary pre-payment information continues to pose challenges across markets. IPID is actively addressing these challenges, ensuring that institutions can verify who is behind payment requests before transactions are irrevocably processed.

The strategic partnership with IPID has also garnered support from Citi's Bis Chatterjee, who emphasized the need for seamless, secure payment validation in today's interconnected financial landscape. With enhanced capabilities courtesy of this partnership, Citi aims to optimize operational performance while instilling confidence in their clients' international transactions.

In a similar vein, HSBC expressed its commitment to extending beneficiary validation through its collaboration with IPID, improving overall efficiency in their dynamic payment environment. Tom Simpson of HSBC remarked,
