New Features This Year

For 2025, the Scripps Howard Journalism Awards introduce a unique incentive. Besides the usual trophy and cash prizes, awardees will also receive a travel stipend to visit a university to present their work to aspiring journalists. Mike Canan, Senior Director of Journalism Strategies for the Scripps Howard Fund, commented, “This opportunity allows the winners' impactful journalism to reach and inspire the next generation of journalists – preparing them to tell stories and reach audiences in innovative ways.”

Impact Award

The pinnacle of the awards is the Impact Award, which is given to an exemplary journalist from any of the 11 awarded categories, recognizing the broader effect of their work on society. The previous year's recipient, Hannah Dreier from The New York Times, played a crucial role in bringing attention to the issue of child labor violations in the U.S., prompting immediate responses from governmental authorities.

Submission Process

Those interested in applying for the awards can now do so via the official submission portal, where detailed guidelines and category descriptions are provided. The finalists for the 72nd Scripps Howard Journalism Awards will be announced in the spring of 2025, setting the stage for a celebration of excellence in journalism.
