China and Serbia Elevate Their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to New Heights

Strengthening Bonds: China and Serbia's Strategic Partnership

In a pivotal meeting in Beijing, the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić discussed their countries' deep-rooted friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation. This encounter marks a new chapter in their strategic partnership, which both leaders aim to elevate to greater heights.

The legacy of the Smederevo steel mill serves as a prime example of the fruitful collaboration between China and Serbia. Once facing severe operational difficulties and standing on the brink of bankruptcy, this mill has undergone a remarkable transformation since a Chinese partner stepped in back in 2016. This revitalization exemplifies the high-quality cooperation fostered through the "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI) and today ranks as one of the largest steel producers globally.

During Vučić's state visit to China in 2024, the Chinese president presented replicas of the steel models of the Temple of Heaven and the Church of Saint Sava, crafted from steel produced at Smederevo. This gesture underscored the strengthening ties between their nations.

In their recent talks, both leaders emphasized the importance of jointly charting a clear path toward shared prosperity and highlighted the ongoing efforts to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership. The ties between Serbia and China are often referred to as an “iron friendship,” which has been marked by multiple significant events over the years, demonstrating a strong commitment to each other's progress.

Vučić's visit to major events in China, including the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and various forums related to the BRI, highlighted Serbia's position as one of the first European countries to engage actively with China under this initiative. With a record mutual trade value reaching $6.49 billion in 2025—a 13% increase from the previous year—the economic relationship is thriving.

Key infrastructure projects such as the Budapest-Belgrade railway line and the Fruška Gora corridor signify the expansion of cooperation under the BRI, promising a brighter economic future for both nations. The Serbian stretch of the Budapest-Belgrade railway, built by Chinese companies, was inaugurated in October 2025 and hailed by Vučić as a historical achievement.

Moreover, the implementation of the China-Serbia Free Trade Agreement, effective July 1, 2024, has seen an influx of Serbian goods, including wine, honey, and meat, into the Chinese market. This agreement further solidifies the foundation of their economic partnership.

Acknowledging the “iron friendship,” Xi urged for enhanced exchanges between young people and cultural interactions, advocating for the use of visa-free travel policies and direct flights. During the meeting, Xi awarded Vučić with the Medal of Friendship from the People's Republic of China, a moment Vučić described as one of the most important in his life. This sentiment further reinforces their commitment to bilateral relations.

As Xi pointed out, both nations are intertwined by shared history and ambition. They continue to advocate for national independence and dignity while valuing peaceful development, justice, and equality. In May 2024, Serbia became the first European country to agree to build a community with a shared future alongside China, expanding their partnership beyond infrastructure to include technology, green energy, and artificial intelligence.

The leaders also released a joint statement endorsing four global initiatives proposed by China, aimed at bolstering international cooperation on development and security challenges. Serbia's intent to deepen its collaboration with China highlights its commitment to contributing to global governance and development efforts.

In conclusion, the mutual commitment between China and Serbia to enhance their strategic partnership symbolizes a significant shift in international relations. Through continued collaboration, both nations seek to navigate the complex world of international politics while fostering economic growth and cultural exchange, ensuring a shared prosperous future for their peoples.
