Okayama University Unveils New Maniwa Satellite Campus for Sustainable Development

New Maniwa Satellite Campus Established

Okayama University (located in Okayama City, Japan) held a grand opening ceremony for its new Maniwa Satellite Campus on September 15, 2025. The event was attended by numerous officials, including Mr. Ota, the Mayor of Maniwa City, and Deputy Mayor Ito. This innovative facility is the result of collaboration between the university and the city, repurposing part of the agricultural training building at the former Okayama Prefectural Maniwa High School’s Kuze site.

The primary purpose of the Maniwa Satellite Campus is to serve as a hub for academic research and practical training in fields such as wood, forestry, and wooden architecture. Students will engage in hands-on learning activities focused on the resources and challenges specific to the northern regions of Okayama Prefecture, particularly in Maniwa City itself.

During the ceremony, President Nasuto Yoshitomo expressed his vision: “We aim to rediscover the value of regional resources, especially those around the wood industry, and we hope to collaborate with local communities in building a sustainable society by deepening knowledge through the involvement of students and faculty.” This sentiment was echoed by Mayor Ota, who noted the importance of fostering a cycle of learning and working that could revitalize the area, which has been grappling with population decline.

Following the ceremony, President Nasuto and Mayor Ota observed the first lecture of a five-day workshop focused on forestry, wood, and wooden architecture. The workshop is designed to equip students with practical skills and insights that can directly contribute to resolving local issues. The hands-on experience is a crucial component of their education, promoting active engagement with the community and real-world problem-solving.

The establishment of the Maniwa Satellite Campus comes at a vital time, as it aligns with global initiatives aimed at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Okayama University has been recognized with a Special Award at the first Japan SDGs Awards and continues to emphasize its commitment to sustainable development.

The campus is more than just an educational facility; it stands as a testament to the university's dedication to regional revitalization and environmental sustainability. By fostering a strong partnership between academia and local government, Okayama University aims to create a nurturing environment where students can thrive while also benefiting the community.

As the Maniwa Satellite Campus begins its journey, both the university and the local government look forward to witnessing the impact of this initiative on students and the community at large. They are hopeful that this collaboration will inspire further educational and research opportunities, solidifying Okayama University’s role as a regional hub of distinctive research and innovation.
