Exhibition Overview
The YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA, located in the heart of Daeim-machi, is currently hosting the solo exhibition "Super Lucky Cats" by artist
Shinichi Wakasa. The exhibition is open from April 10 to April 24, 2025. A special feature of this exhibition is its inviting atmosphere filled with various
lucky cat sculptures, embodying the artist's pursuit of beauty in Japanese art through modern pop culture forms like anime and manga.
Artist Insight
Shinichi Wakasa, a graduate of Hiroshima City University where he specialized in Japanese painting, has dedicated his artistic career since 2013 to exploring the nuances of Japanese beauty. In his work, he reflects on personal memories and aesthetic experiences, particularly focusing on impressions left by childhood influences such as the anime "Bikkuriman." This series showcased a mix of characters from various religious and mythological backgrounds, which profoundly influenced Wakasa's interpretation of beauty.
In his interview, Wakasa shares, "The chaos of multiple mythological figures, like angels and deities from different cultures, in
Bikkuriman was foundational for my artistic identity. It sparked my interest in the beauty of distortion and transformation in art."
Upcoming Events
In conjunction with the exhibition, a special talk session titled "Forms of Wishes, Origins of Thoughts" will be held on April 19, 2025, at
3 PM. This event will feature discussions with Shinichi Wakasa and Mariko Inokuma, the CEO of OMOYA, as they delve into the themes of wishes and prayers articulated through art in today’s chaotic world. Attendees can gain insights into the journey of female empowerment as discussed by Inokuma.
This session aims to foster conversations around navigating current societal challenges while sharing personal aspirations. After the talk, a welcoming after-party will allow guests to mingle and immerse themselves in the whimsical environment of Wakasa's creations.
