National Kidney Registry Launches the Nutcracker Care Network

In a significant move to enhance the lives of individuals suffering from Nutcracker Syndrome, the National Kidney Registry (NKR) has officially launched the Nutcracker Care Network (NCN), a national initiative aimed at improving care, treatment, and support for patients impacted by this rare condition. This newly formed network comprises 14 leading transplant centers across the country equipped with specialized teams dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by Nutcracker Syndrome patients.

Nutcracker Syndrome is characterized by the compression of the left renal vein, which occurs between the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. This compression often results in debilitating symptoms, including pain and hematuria (blood in urine). Patients experiencing these symptoms frequently undergo a long and arduous journey before receiving an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment options.

Dr. Matthew Cooper, the Surgical Director of NKR, spoke passionately about the need for better resources and support for these patients, emphasizing that many suffer for years in search of solutions. "These patients deserve better," he stated. The NCN aims to provide comprehensive evaluations and coordinated care, ensuring that individuals are not only treated but also supported throughout their healthcare journey.

The network is built on the collaborative expertise of transplant professionals who are well-versed in the complexities of Nutcracker Syndrome. Throughout 2025, the NKR facilitated 15 living kidney donations from patients afflicted with this condition, with expectations to complete over 100 donations by the end of 2026. Patients typically participate in the NKR's Family Voucher program, which supports living donations. Moreover, the Donor Shield program and dedicated mentors assist these individuals through the donation process.

Therapeutic nephrectomy—a procedure involving the removal of the affected kidney—can often be the recommended treatment for many Nutcracker Syndrome patients after exploring other interventions. When feasible, the removed kidney can be transplanted to save the life of another individual suffering from kidney failure, thus bringing an element of hope to not only patients with Nutcracker Syndrome but also to those awaiting transplants.
