Grammy Winner Ann Nesby Brings Hidden Civil Rights Hero Cirilo McSween's Story to the Screen

Ann Nesby Takes the Spotlight in Civil Rights Documentary

Grammy-winning artist Ann Nesby, renowned for her powerhouse vocals and previous roles in projects like Queen Sugar and The Fighting Temptations, is stepping into a new role as the executive producer and narrator of a potent documentary titled CIRILO, A Legacy Untold. This film, which spotlights the significant yet often overlooked contributions of civil rights figure Cirilo McSween, is set to embark on its Oscar-qualifying theatrical release at Atlanta’s Tara Theatre from February 14 to February 20, 2025.

Cirilo McSween: A Legacy Uncovered

CIRILO, A Legacy Untold sheds light on the life of Cirilo McSween, an important but hidden figure in the civil rights movement who played a crucial role in economic empowerment initiatives. As a Panamanian immigrant, McSween served as the Chief Economic Advisor for Operation Breadbasket, working alongside civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, and Andrew Young. His efforts were instrumental in advancing civil rights through significant economic initiatives, particularly during a transformative period in the 1960s and 1970s.

One of McSween's notable achievements was his involvement in securing the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties, a pivotal moment in U.S.-Panamanian relations that returned control of the Panama Canal to its home country. This landmark accomplishment not only redefined international relations but also aligned with President Jimmy Carter's vision of diplomacy.

Director Justin O. Cooper emphasized the importance of McSween’s contributions, stating, “This film shines a light on an overlooked leader who financed the civil rights movement and shaped economic policy and diplomacy.” Cooper himself brings a wealth of experience, having worked not only as a film director but also as a liaison for various productions in Georgia, including the popular films Ride Along and What to Expect When You're Expecting.

Personal Connection to the Story

For Nesby, this project resonates on a deeply personal level. In her own words, she reflected, “His story is one of resilience and vision. His work opened doors for so many, and it's an honor to share his legacy.” As an artist with deep roots in the Atlanta community, Nesby’s commitment to amplifying forgotten narratives of African American leaders adds a layer of authenticity and passion to the film.

Oscar Festival Momentum

With its run at the Tara Theatre, CIRILO, A Legacy Untold qualifies for submission to the 2026 Academy Awards in the Documentary Short category. The film is fiscally sponsored by Film Independent and aims to kick off its festival run following its theatrical release. This could pave the way for a broader recognition of McSween’s contributions within arts and civil rights circles.
