PTC Introduces Cloud-Native Model-Based Definition Features in Onshape to Transform Engineering Workflows

PTC Unveils Revolutionary Onshape Features for Engineering Teams

PTC, headquartered in Massachusetts, has launched a groundbreaking feature set within its Onshape platform, specifically designed for cloud-native Model-Based Definition (MBD). This integration is set to revolutionize how engineering teams manage the design and manufacturing processes by embedding manufacturing information directly into 3D models right from the early stages of the design phase.

The new MBD capabilities promise to streamline operations, clarify design intentions, and reduce transitional efforts between various teams, ultimately enhancing overall efficiency in design, documentation, manufacturing, and quality control. Traditional CAD and Product Data Management (PDM) systems often segregate manufacturing data across various drawings and export files, leading to challenges in ensuring the most up-to-date, accessible, and reliable product definitions. In contrast, Onshape's cloud-native platform built on AWS enables teams to collaborate effectively, sharing the latest product definitions seamlessly while minimizing errors and expediting workflows.

Marc Germain, Chief Digital Officer at Aura Aero, states, "When manufacturing aircraft under stringent regulations, ambiguity can be costly. As an early user of Onshape's MBD, being able to keep certification and manufacturing requirements within the model rather than in drawings or files helps reduce rework and shorten review cycles, leading to improved work efficiency between teams."

Further insights were shared by Michael Choe, General Manager of Automotive and Manufacturing at AWS, who highlighted, "Onshape's Model-Based Definition is a great example of how AWS and PTC are modernizing engineering. By reconstructing core engineering tools on a cloud-native platform, we facilitate global scaling, enhance AI capabilities, and enable frictionless real-time collaboration across distributed teams. This strategic partnership significantly advances how teams design, manufacture, and bring products to market."

The primary features of the MBD enhancement include:

  • - Integrated 3D Annotations: Engineers can embed GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), welding symbols, and datum directly into the 3D model, clearly conveying design intent without relying on 2D drawings.
  • - Smart Inspection Panels: All product manufacturing information is automatically organized into a structured, filterable list, instantly highlighting relevant model shapes for easy access.
  • - Shareable MBD Views: Models containing PMI (product manufacturing information), along with views and annotations, can be shared through a simple URL, allowing for browser-based access without the need for exports or plugins.
  • - Feature Tree Integration: MBD annotations link intelligently to the feature tree, ensuring consistency of specifications related to design changes.
  • - Downstream Data Compatibility: Integrations with tools like STEP AP242, PC-DMIS, and AS9102 ensure compliance and inspection workflows are supported.

David Katzman, EVP and General Manager of Onshape and Arena, remarked, "Cloud-native MBD represents a crucial step in enabling our customers to establish intelligent and complete digital product lifecycles. Transitioning product definitions to the cloud allows companies to finally break down barriers between design, manufacturing, and other corporate divisions. The scalable infrastructure and AI functionalities provided by AWS make Onshape a faster and more robust cloud-native platform."

PTC is committed to realizing its vision of an Intelligent Product Lifecycle (IPL) through Onshape and its broader portfolio. This vision empowers manufacturers and product organizations to build foundational product data capabilities, extend value company-wide, and accelerate transformations through AI innovations. By utilizing product data more broadly, companies can deliver high-quality products to market faster, manage product complexity effectively, and more easily comply with regulatory demands.
