TECNO Partners with Universities to Improve Skin Tone Diversity Representation in Mobile Imaging Tech

TECNO's Commitment to Inclusive Mobile Imaging

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing inclusivity in mobile technology, TECNO, a leading tech brand, has formed a partnership with the University of Leeds in the UK and Dar Al-Hekma University in Saudi Arabia. This collaboration strives to refine their innovative Universal Tone technology, which aims to represent the diverse skin tones of Saudi consumers authentically.

The Need for Diversity in Mobile Imaging

The cosmetic and tech industries increasingly recognize the importance of accurately portraying a wide range of skin tones. TECNO's Universal Tone technology, unveiled in 2023, has already made strides in this area. With a focus on capturing the nuances of human diversity, the recent partnership aims to elevate the accuracy and authenticity of TECNO's mobile imaging technology, particularly for Saudi Arabia's culturally rich and diverse population.

Professor Kaida Xiao, who leads the research team and specializes in Color and Imaging Science, emphasizes the global demand for mobile technologies that reflect diverse skin tones. He notes that Saudi Arabia, with its varied complexions, from light to dark, represents a significant market with unique needs. The project intends to develop a comprehensive skin tone database that captures the vast array of tones found within the Saudi population.

Expanding the Local Skin Tone Database

Through extensive research and data collection, TECNO aims to build a localized database that will inform its image processing algorithms. This effort seeks to ensure that parts of the smartphone experience, particularly photography, resonate with consumers' reality, enhancing their overall brand engagement. The partnership will create new skin tone patches, augmenting TECNO’s existing global database of 268 patches to cater specifically to Saudi consumers.

Moreover, new skin tone patches will illustrate the rich diversity of Saudi appearances, tailored to regional preferences. This focus on local representation underscores TECNO's strategy of 'Glocalization,' which seeks to adapt global innovations for regional needs.

Innovating for Authentic Representation

TECNO's collaboration extends beyond just data collection; it also involves refining the technology behind its devices. They plan to adjust their image processing algorithms to better accommodate the unique visual characteristics of Saudi skin tones. This approach places TECNO at the forefront of mobile imaging technology, ensuring consumers can see themselves authentically in their photos.

As part of its efforts to promote diversity, TECNO recently launched the #ToneProud campaign, emphasizing the significance of skin tone representation in mobile tech. The campaign showcased Universal Tone's comprehensive skin tone database, illustrating the brand's dedication to addressing the needs of diverse populations.

Academic Insights Drive Success

In addition to leveraging quantitative data, the partnership benefits greatly from the qualitative insights of experts, such as Professor Ahmed Nasseraldin from Dar Al-Hekma University. He points out the vital role cultural understanding plays in successfully capturing the aesthetics and preferences of Saudi users. His expertise enriches the research, ensuring that the developed technologies align with the local demographics and preferences.

The collaboration signifies TECNO's commitment to steering innovations towards inclusivity, ensuring every consumer feels authentically represented. With Saudi Arabia as a focal point for this project, the findings aim to inform future technologies across the Middle East, thus encouraging wider adoption and recognition of diverse skin tones.

A Vision for the Future

TECNO general manager, Jack Guo, articulated the brand’s mission of setting a global standard for inclusive imaging. The partnership with the University of Leeds marks a continuation of TECNO's efforts since its initial collaboration in 2023 and reflects the broader ambition to understand and serve consumers effectively across different markets.

As TECNO relentlessly enhances its mobile imaging technologies, its hope is to pave the way for a future in which every individual, regardless of their skin tone, feels both seen and celebrated. Through these advancements, TECNO stays true to its brand philosophy: “Stop At Nothing.” By integrating cultural awareness into technological innovation, TECNO is changing the landscape of mobile imaging for the better.
