Lions Clubs International Foundation and WFP USA Boost Global School Meals Program with $12 Million Commitment
Growing the Global School Meals Initiative
In a landmark expansion of the Global School Meals Initiative, the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and World Food Program USA have announced a substantial commitment of $12 million over three years. Each organization will contribute $2 million annually, building on the successes of a 2024 pilot program which significantly improved food security for children in four countries.
Addressing Nutritional Needs
As the need for nutritious meals becomes increasingly urgent in many parts of the world, this partnership aims to provide essential nutrition to thousands of children who rely on school for their daily meals. Barron Segar, President and CEO of World Food Program USA, emphasized the critical nature of the collaboration: “LCIF and Lions everywhere are turning their compassion into action, joining us to provide children with the essential nutrition they need to learn and grow.”
The expanded initiative will initially support school meal programs in Ghana, Honduras, Kenya, Madagascar, and Nicaragua, alongside continued assistance in Uganda and Nepal, showcasing a strong commitment to global needs. The program not only focuses on providing meals but also seeks to reach more countries each year, emphasizing community-driven solutions.
A Local Approach to Global Goals
The homegrown school meals initiative aims to connect local farmers with schools, sourcing meals within the community. This not only supports the health of children but also helps bolster the economy by increasing farmers’ income and promoting local food security. Research shows that school meal programs can boost enrollment rates, notably increasing attendance by 12% for girls and 9% for all students, reinforcing the importance of nutrition in education.
Fabrício Oliveira, chairperson of LCIF, remarked on the partnership's essence stating, “This partnership reflects the very heart of what it means to be a Lion and empowers us to expand our efforts to alleviate hunger and support children in need.” Lions within these communities are pivotal in ensuring that the initiatives are sustained long into the future.
Impact of the Pilot Program
The pilot program in 2024 demonstrated impressive outcomes, with over 653,000 children receiving nutritious meals. It also supported more than 10,000 local farmers, distributed over 827 metric tons of food, and introduced clean cooking stoves. The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive; for example, Namrata Saru, a fifth-grade student in Uganda, shared her experience: “Before, I had to bring money from home to buy noodles or biscuits. If I didn't have any, I'd skip class. Now, we get hot meals at school every day. I never miss a [class] period.”
A Vision for the Future
As the world's largest provider of school meals, WFP has collaborated with over 50 governments to take ownership of their school meal programs. LCIF’s extensive global presence and commitment to humanitarian service ensure that this partnership will continue to make a significant impact.
LCIF has awarded more than $1.3 billion in grant funds since its inception, aiming to improve community well-being and health.
This partnership exemplifies the profound impact of community-focused initiatives, uniting volunteers, local leaders, and global organizations towards a common goal: nourishing children and building sustainable futures. By harnessing collective resources, LCIF and World Food Program USA are paving the way for a new era of school meal initiatives that not only nourish the young minds of today but also promote a healthier, more secure future for generations to come.
