Fortune's 2026 List of Most Innovative Companies in Europe

On June 18, 2026, Fortune announced its latest list identifying the most innovative companies within Europe, recognizing a total of 300 firms that are pioneering significant advancements across various sectors. For the second year running, this ranking evaluates European companies with over 250 employees based on three critical dimensions: product innovation, process innovation, and innovation culture.

Germany Takes the Lead

Germany stands out in this year’s ranking, contributing a substantial number of companies—56 in total. This is followed closely by Switzerland with 47 representatives, France with 41, the United Kingdom with 35, and Italy with 34. Collectively, these top five countries account for 71% of the entire list. Notably, France has four companies in the top ten, while the Netherlands impressively has two, including the top-ranked ASML Holding.

Dominant Sectors

The financial and technology sectors are the most prevalent within the list, listing 48 and 32 companies, respectively. It is also important to note that larger companies dominate the rankings, with more than three-quarters of the recognized firms employing over 10,000 individuals.

ASML Holding tops the list, recognized for its significant contributions to semiconductor equipment. The company is at the forefront of lithography advances, which are essential for creating the next-generation chips. Its continuous innovations in extreme ultraviolet technology, computational lithography, and high numerical aperture systems are pioneering the development of chips that are higher in density and performance while also being energy-efficient.

Grethe Schepers, the head of Lists for Europe at Fortune, emphasized the importance of these companies: “The most promising businesses in Europe are addressing critical challenges, transforming innovative ideas into tangible growth across various sectors, from manufacturing and energy to health care and technology.”
