Interchain Foundation Supports Open-Source Development of evmOS to Enhance Ethereum-Cosmos Integration

Interchain Foundation Strengthens Blockchain Interoperability with evmOS

In a significant development for the blockchain landscape, the Interchain Foundation (ICF) has officially invested in the open-source release of evmOS, a groundbreaking Ethereum-compatible Layer 1 solution. This initiative is set to empower developers to build EVM-supported blockchains utilizing the robust capabilities of the Cosmos SDK. By fostering Ethereum-native user support and advancing protocol interoperability, this development represents a major step forward for the Cosmos ecosystem.

The decision to open-source evmOS under the Apache 2.0 license has been hailed as a pivotal moment, as it allows other developers to collaborate on enhancing the ecosystem further. The ICF will also produce a fork of this technology known as Cosmos EVM to facilitate its integration into the Interchain Stack. This move is seen as crucial for the long-term evolution of the code and its usability within the Cosmos framework.

Federico Kunze Küllmer, a co-founder of Evmos and an instrumental figure in the development of the evmOS codebase, will transition from his role within Evmos to take on an advisory position concerning Cosmos EVM, emphasizing interoperability between Ethereum and Cosmos as well as advancements in modular blockchain architecture.

“Building evmOS has been an incredible journey, and I am proud of the impact we've had on building the EVM ecosystem on Cosmos,” said Küllmer.

“It's the right move for our community, ensuring the longevity and vitality of the code we've developed.”

The integration of evmOS showcases the deep-rooted ties between the Cosmos SDK and Ethereum's virtual machine, establishing a unique synergy that enhances the user experience across both ecosystems. As Barry Plunkett, Co-CEO of Interchain Labs, noted, evmOS merges the advantages of both platforms seamlessly.

A Vision for the Future

The shift towards open-source development will allow for increased innovation and flexibility. The ICF and its subsidiary, Interchain Labs, aim to take the lead in not only nurturing the Cosmos EVM but also ensuring its continuous improvement and integration across the wider Cosmos ecosystem. This initiative resonates with ICF’s mission to advocate for permissionless innovation and develop superior tools that facilitate world-scale application building.

With imminent plans to align Cosmos EVM as the premier EVM solution for Cosmos chains, developers will benefit from broader freedoms to contribute, modify, and implement the software in various applications. This commitment serves to cultivate a more decentralized and inclusive development community.

“We are excited to support the further evolution of evmOS under our guidance,” remarked Josh Cincinnati, president of the ICF’s Foundation Council.

“Federico’s expertise and leadership have been vital in developing our Etheremint and evmOS solutions, paving the way for a robust proof-of-stake network.”

What Lies Ahead

The roadmap for the newly minted Cosmos EVM emphasizes its dedication to enhancing the Ethereum ecosystem while ensuring seamless compatibility within Cosmos. The ICF and ICL will closely collaborate with existing evmOS projects to facilitate a smooth transition in upcoming network upgrades.

As we enter this new chapter of blockchain evolution, experts from ICF, including Federico Kunze Küllmer and others, are poised to share their insights and support through this monumental shift in blockchain technology. The open-source nature of this initiative is set to unlock unprecedented opportunities within the blockchain space, ultimately pushing the boundaries of what decentralized applications can achieve across diverse ecosystems.

About the Organizations

Interchain Foundation (ICF) is a non-profit organization based in Switzerland, focused on advancing decentralized blockchain infrastructure and fostering innovation within the interchain economy. Interchain Labs is the ICF's primary subsidiary, tasked with engineering, product, marketing, and growth initiatives within the Cosmos ecosystem. evmOS stands as an Ethereum-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that integrates EVM functionalities into the Cosmos framework, enabling developers to build highly composable decentralized applications.
