Folger Consort Teams Up with O.B. Hardison Poetry Series for Baroque Music and Poetry Evening

A Unique Collaboration: Folger Consort and O.B. Hardison Poetry Series

In a groundbreaking partnership, Folger Consort, the esteemed early music ensemble based at the Folger Shakespeare Library, has joined forces with the O.B. Hardison Poetry Series for the very first time. This collaboration presents a one-of-a-kind program entitled "Virtuosos of Violin and Verse," which explores the intricate relationship between music and poetry during the Baroque period. The performances are set to take place at the Folger’s Elizabethan-style Theatre on Capitol Hill from November 7 to November 9, 2025.

"Music and poetry have a natural partnership and storied history together that has yet to be explored on our stage," remarked Jaleelah Thompson, Folger Music and Poetry Producer. This partnership aims to provide a platform for enthusiasts of both art forms, inviting them to experience an inspiring dialogue that transcends centuries and genres.

Celebrating Baroque Masters

The program features a rich selection of music that highlights the works of renowned Baroque composers. Noteworthy compositions include pieces by Italian musicians like Biagio Marini, Girolamo Frescobaldi, and Barbara Strozzi, as well as George Frideric Handel’s acclaimed aria, "Lascia ch'io pianga."

Audiences can look forward to the charms of Strozzi’s emotionally charged "Che si può fare?" not to mention highlights from the operatic repertoire, including Tartini's sonata based on Virgil's The Aeneid. Such works reveal the depth of human experience as captured by both music and poetry.

Co-Artistic Director Robert Eisenstein expressed his excitement, stating, "We are eager to kick off the Consort's season with wonderful music and poetry." The performances will include the participation of four extraordinary virtuosos and consist not only of instrumental pieces but also new poems crafted specifically to respond to the music being performed.

Marvelous Guest Artists

Featured performers comprise a talented ensemble, including Folger Consort co-founder Robert Eisenstein (on viol, violin, and recorder), Tatiana Chulochnikova (violin), Paula Maust (harpsichord), and Rebecca Myers (soprano). Notably, poet Rose Solari will grace the stage, sharing her original works inspired by the event’s musical segments, thus adding a present-day twist to the classic Baroque soundscape.

To help prepare audiences ahead of the event, Eisenstein will host a lively virtual seminar on November 5 at 6 PM, offering an exclusive sneak peek into the concerts’ musical highlights. Tickets for this seminar are available online for $10, with a complimentary entry for Folger Members and Subscribers.
