Exploring Soil Richness and Vegetables in Fukaya City: Hatake Classroom Event

Experience the Bounty of the Earth in Fukaya

On May 16th, from 10 AM to 12 PM, the Palsystem Saitama co-op, led by chairperson Yoshiko Nishiuchi, will host an engaging agricultural event named the "Hatake Classroom" at the Oko farm of Wokudo-Kai in Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture. This initiative aims to connect families with the essence of farming through rich exploration of soil and fresh vegetables.

Understanding Agricultural Practices

The "Hatake Classroom" is designed as a four-part series, with each session focusing on hands-on experience in the fields. Around 20 participating families will begin their adventure in Fukaya City, a region known for its cultivation of over 40 vegetable varieties. Guided by the producers, attendees will learn the intricacies of creating fertile soil through the utilization of organic materials, such as rice straw and fallen leaves, coupled with the power of microorganisms.

During the event, families will be involved in harvesting vegetables, weeding, and seeding, providing them with hands-on experience in agricultural practices. The ongoing farming activities will take place in a specially managed area known as "Waku Waku Farm," where they will prepare for growing summer crops like corn under the guidance of skilled instructors.

A Continuous Journey of Learning

Families participating in this initiative will have the opportunity to visit the "Waku Waku Farm" seasonally, allowing them to witness the growth of vegetables up close. This unique experience instills a deep appreciation for agriculture and the processes behind food production, reinforcing the importance of connecting with nature and our food sources.

Foster Understanding through Continuous Interaction

Since its establishment in 1980, Wokudo-Kai has been committed to enhancing the environment by returning organic materials like rice straw and chicken manure to the soil. Their approach prioritizes the development of healthy and fertile ground without reliance on chemical fertilizers or synthetic pesticides. In 1983, Wokudo-Kai formed a partnership with the pre-existing organization of Palsystem Saitama, and in 2011, they founded the "Agricultural, Color, Soil" council alongside the Saitama Direct Network.

Through the ongoing exchanges fostered by this council between producers and consumers, local agricultural development and environmental conservation in Saitama are further promoted. Events like the "Hatake Classroom" and the winter "Wokudo-Kai Negi Festival" work to deepen mutual understanding and trust between participants throughout the year.

Moving forward, Palsystem Saitama is dedicated to strengthening its collaborations with local agricultural producers while striving for sustainable practices in both production and consumption.
