China Mobile International Unveils AI-Driven Innovation in Hong Kong

On August 6, 2025, China Mobile International Limited (CMI) made a significant leap in technological innovation by holding the "AI+ Intelligent Computility Collaboration Launch" in Hong Kong, concurrently hosted at a branch venue in Guangdong, China. The event, themed "Computility Fuels Tomorrow, Forging Innovation in Hong Kong," showcased CMI's commitment to enhancing communication and computing capabilities in the digital age.

The occasion highlighted three essential upgrades in intelligent network capacity, application integration, and collaboration within the computing ecosystem. Among the key announcements were the launch of the Southeast Asia–Japan Cable 2 (SJC2) and the AI+ Smart Finance Solution. These advancements aim to bolster Hong Kong's position as an international hub for technology while providing a foundation for further AI development in the region.

The event attracted over 100 stakeholders from various sectors, including government officials, academia, and the business community. Notable attendees included Mr. Wang Limin, Executive Director of China Mobile Limited, Ms. Cheong Man-lei, Under Secretary for the HKSAR's Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau, and Mr. Mu Chenhong from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative effort in advancing Hong Kong's AI industry.

SJC2 Cable: A Gateway to Enhanced Connectivity

SJC2, which became operational on July 16, 2025, spans an impressive 10,500 kilometers with a capacity of 126 Tbps. This new submarine cable further cements Hong Kong's role as a critical digital hub, enhancing connectivity with other key Asia-Pacific nations. Leveraging cutting-edge optical wavelength division multiplexing technology, SJC2 ensures ultra-low latency across major points in the region, setting the standard for future communication technologies.

CMI has also pioneered the commercial application of Hollow-Core Optical Fiber in China, establishing a low-latency express route between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, with industry-leading latency under one millisecond. This innovative infrastructure is a cornerstone of the AI+ Smart Finance Solution, which integrates advanced Large Language Models (LLM) and intelligent algorithms, paving the way for more efficient financial services such as real-time transactions and risk management.

Empowering Hong Kong’s Tech Ecosystem

Recognizing the need for an integrated approach to AI development, CMI entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hong Kong Cyberport, aiming to bolster cooperation in the AI ecosystem. This partnership will aid Chinese enterprises in establishing a foothold in Hong Kong while simultaneously supporting local tech firms in global expansion efforts.

In her speech, Ms. Cheong highlighted the government’s commitment to AI as a key industry, signaling a favorable climate for technological advancements. She lauded the synchronized efforts between CMI and Cyberport, which align perfectly with national and local AI strategies. These initiatives will create pathways for mainland enterprises to set up operations in Hong Kong and assist local businesses in scaling their operations internationally.

CMI's progressive outlook is not limited to just connecting networks; it envisions Hong Kong as a hub for information convergence, application aggregation, and ecosystem integration. The company is committed to driving initiatives for AI infrastructure, industrial applications, and ecosystem cooperation, aiming to expand the local AI landscape into a global player.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future

The collaboration between CMI and Cyberport symbolizes a vital step toward strengthening Hong Kong's technological innovation ecosystem. By pooling their resources and expertise, both entities aim to propel Hong Kong into a position where it can lead in the Digital Silk Road initiative, creating a win-win environment that fosters growth for start-ups and established enterprises alike.

As CMI progresses with its mission, it continues to empower not only Hong Kong but also the greater Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, contributing to the establishment of a robust international intelligent computing hub and a center for fintech innovation. With such investments and infrastructural advancements, CMI is set to inject vigorous momentum into the emergence of new digital forces, further enhancing Hong Kong's reputation on the global stage.
