Grand Tour 2026: Celebrating Art and Cultural Exchange at CAA Graduation
On June 1, 2026, the China Academy of Art (CAA) launched its highly anticipated "Grand Tour • 2026 CAA Graduation Season" in Hangzhou. This extensive exhibition features nearly 3,000 graduation projects created by 2,888 graduates from 20 academic units, housed at nine venues throughout the vibrant city of Hangzhou.
This year's celebration goes beyond a mere graduation showcase; it also marks the beginning of the International Youth Art Dialogue series. This initiative, which commenced on the same day, includes a trio of significant events aimed at fostering collaboration and dialogue among emerging artists and educators. The lineup includes the "Mission of Art Education in Light of Global Civilizations — Dialogue among International Art Academy Presidents," the "International Young Artists Dialogue," and the "One Art Boundless Seas — International Youth Art Exhibition." These gatherings attract leaders from over 50 international art academies as well as young artists from more than 50 countries, creating a unique cross-cultural exchange.
Yu Xuhong, President of CAA, shared his insights on the importance of artistic education and public engagement. He emphasized that the CAA Graduation Season encapsulates a well-rounded academic approach, highlighting important advancements across various artistic disciplines. Yu stressed the necessity for art to engage actively with the public and to find its place within real-world contexts. As Hangzhou evolves into a global art hub, the graduation exhibition has begun to play a crucial role in shaping an innovative landscape for world art.
Since its inception in 2009, CAA has made waves by publicly showcasing graduation works from all disciplines. This creative endeavor flourished in 2019, when for the first time, the exhibition expanded its reach beyond the confines of the campus and into Hangzhou itself, establishing itself as China's most influential graduation showcase. The theme for this year, "Grand Tour," embodies the practice of immersing oneself in the world, where every journey becomes a learning experience. Mountains and rivers transform into classrooms, allowing young artists to engage directly with their surroundings and understand cultural evolution through observable experiences.
The opening ceremony on June 1 featured an exhilarating performance that combined elements of theater and fashion, merging physical structures with digital screens and showcasing 140 unique ready-to-wear outfits. A specially composed theme song, titled "Grand Tour," echoed the spirit and aspirations of youth, making the occasion truly memorable.
The International Youth Art Dialogue, enriched by the ethos of the "Grand Tour," aims to create a holistic environment that integrates teaching, creation, research, and exhibition. This initiative aspires to be an open forum for young artists and educators from around the globe, collaboratively envisioning the future of art education and enhancing cross-cultural conversations.
In these times of uncertainty, the significance of art lies in its ability to navigate transformative periods, fostering connections and defining a path amid chaos. The CAA graduation exhibition remains an event for the community—an artistic manifesto for today's youth. It encourages the younger generation to utilize their surroundings as their stage, embarking confidently on their grand journey of self-discovery and creativity.
The exhibition will run until June 21, providing ample opportunity for the public to experience the innovative works and artistic expressions of the next generation of artists.
