Current Status of DX and AI Utilization in the Construction Industry: A Recent Survey
In today's rapidly advancing digital landscape, the construction industry is facing unique challenges and opportunities. A comprehensive study conducted by Infomart Corporation surveyed 1,040 professionals across various roles in the construction sector, from site managers to back-office staff. The findings shed light on the current state of digital transformation (DX) and the use of generative AI in this vital industry.
Key Findings of the Survey
Digital Transformation Status
The survey revealed that 33% of construction sites and 25% of back-office functions have yet to embark on their digital transformation journey. This indicates that a significant portion of the industry is still unprepared for the advancements that digital tools and processes can bring. The results also highlighted that only 16% of companies are fully utilizing digital solutions across their operations.
Generative AI Utilization
Regarding generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT and Gemini, only 33% of respondents reported that they are using these tools in their work. This usage rate is notably lower than the 55% average reported among Japanese companies, suggesting that the construction industry is lagging behind other sectors in AI adoption. Additionally, the survey found disparities in the establishment of usage guidelines, with only 18% of companies having formal rules in place for AI utilization, revealing a significant gap in readiness.
Workers' Confidence in Future Skills
Among those utilizing generative AI, over half expressed confidence in the future value of their skills, seeing AI as an ally in enhancing their professional expertise. However, among non-users, only 25% feel the same way. This contrast indicates a psychological divide in how employees view their career prospects in relation to AI technologies.
Application of Generative AI in Construction
When asked how they are using generative AI, the most common responses included email and document drafting (54.1%), meeting minutes and summaries (29.4%), and assistance with budget estimation (17.4%). This demonstrates that generative AI is beginning to contribute to efficiency in tasks specific to the construction industry.
Challenges to AI Utilization
The biggest challenge in implementing generative AI in construction is the lack of specialized personnel capable of managing and utilizing this technology effectively, with 26.9% of respondents citing this as a major hurdle. Others pointed to the uncertainty regarding practical applications of AI, and concerns over the accuracy of AI-generated outputs. These findings highlight the need for clarity on how to integrate AI into construction workflows.
Comments from Infomart
Shigeru Ishikura, head of the Data and AI Lab, noted that the survey results indicate that generative AI’s influence extends beyond operational efficiency; it also impacts employees' confidence in their career paths. To harness AI effectively within the construction industry, it is crucial to provide opportunities for hands-on experience and create environments conducive to digital transformation.
Additionally, building a robust data framework is essential for maximizing AI investment. Digitizing traditional processes, such as estimates, contracts, and invoices, is vital for creating an accessible data environment that enhances AI capabilities.
Infomart continues to promote digital transformation tailored to the unique needs of the construction industry, aiming to assist companies in overcoming their challenges.
