National Press Club Launches Rich Passan Scholarship for Aspiring Sports Journalists
On October 24, 2025, the National Press Club proudly announced the establishment of the Rich Passan Sports Writing Scholarship, which will award $5,000 annually to undergraduate students who demonstrate talent and promise in the field of sports journalism.
Created in honor of Rich Passan, a renowned journalist who contributed over four decades to The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, the scholarship aims to support the next generation of sports communicators. Jeff Passan, an ESPN MLB insider and Rich's son, along with their family have initiated this scholarship to pay tribute to Rich's legacy and passion for storytelling.

The Rich Passan Sports Writing Scholarship will first be awarded in the spring of 2026, targeting rising college juniors and seniors who wish to excel in sports journalism. Applicants are required to submit representative samples of their sportswriting, a short essay, and a resume. While there is no minimum GPA requirement, students must provide a transcript demonstrating they are in good academic standing.
