FANUC Launches Massive Automation Training Center to Shape Future Workforce

FANUC Opens the Largest Automation Training Center in the U.S.

FANUC America has just unveiled the FANUC Training Academy, which is now the largest robotics and industrial automation training facility in the United States. This significant expansion represents a bold investment of over $18 million and provides an innovative solution to ongoing workforce development challenges in the manufacturing sector.

A New Era in Workforce Training

Located in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the new facility covers an impressive 132,000 square feet, with more than 56,300 square feet dedicated solely to training. This tangible investment speaks volumes about FANUC's commitment to equipping technicians, engineers, and other industry professionals with the essential skills needed for today's advanced manufacturing landscape.

Mike Cicco, President and CEO of FANUC America, emphasizes the urgency of this initiative, stating, "Manufacturers across North America are investing in robotics, automation, and AI technologies, but the shortage of skilled workers poses a significant challenge. Our new Training Academy aims to bridge this gap and prepare the workforce for high-skilled, technology-driven roles."

The facility replaces FANUC's previous training center in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and is designed to significantly enhance the training capacity by increasing the number of classrooms from 13 to 28. With a network now comprising nine facilities, FANUC anticipates training around 17,500 individuals annually.

Focus on Hands-On Learning

The academy boasts an advanced robotics infrastructure featuring over 160 operational robots and more than 40 CNC simulators. This hands-on approach fosters a deeper understanding of automated processes, addressing the skills gap that many manufacturers face.

Rich Meyer, general manager of FANUC's Customer Service Group, remarks, "Advanced automation demands advanced skills. Our academy provides access to the latest technologies that are revolutionizing manufacturing. By amplifying hands-on learning opportunities, we are actively aiding manufacturers in shaping a qualified workforce."

The new training hub not only caters to FANUC customers but also engages with educational institutions. The Certified Education Training (CERT) program supports over 1,700 schools across North America, engaging approximately 60,000 students in robotics and automation education each year.

Strengthening American Manufacturing

Adding to its financial commitment, FANUC announced an additional $90 million investment in Michigan, further enhancing its manufacturing capabilities in the region. U.S. Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling acknowledged this investment during a recent tour, recognizing the academy's role in equipping Americans with the skills necessary for high-paying jobs in this rapidly developing industry.

The facility was constructed through a locally-focused approach, significantly employing Michigan-based contractors and laborers. In addition to advanced classrooms, the academy provides a full-service cafeteria and ample parking, ensuring a conducive learning environment.

Cicco highlights the strategic importance of the Training Academy for the metro Detroit area, stating, "This center reinforces the region's standing as an international hub for manufacturing innovation. The concentration of manufacturers, academic institutions, and skilled labor in the area makes it an ideal training location for aspiring professionals from across North America."

Broad Workforce Development Initiatives

The Training Academy supports a variety of workforce development programs, including partnerships with community colleges, high school mechatronics courses, and educator certification offerings. This multi-faceted approach not only prepares students for careers in advanced manufacturing but also assists in the sector's overall modernization efforts.

FANUC's ongoing mission to enhance manufacturing and workforce development extends beyond this training academy. Recent initiatives include opening FANUC’s $110 million West Campus, which expands their footprint to over 2 million square feet and supports increasing automation demands across North America.

Furthermore, FANUC champions workforce development through competitions and hands-on training with SkillsUSA, supporting student exposure to automation and robotics technologies. The company has also allocated $1 million towards a scholarship fund aimed at encouraging students to pursue careers in advanced manufacturing.

In conclusion, FANUC's launch of the Training Academy marks a significant step toward addressing the skilled labor shortages in robotics and automation, ensuring a robust future for the industry and creating pathways to rewarding careers for the next generation of workers. As manufacturing continues to evolve, facilities like the FANUC Training Academy are critical to meeting industry demands and fostering innovation.
