Virginia American Water Celebrates Grants Supporting Local Environmental Initiatives

On April 28, 2026, Virginia American Water proudly announced the recipients of the 2026 Water and Environment grants awarded by the American Water Charitable Foundation. This philanthropic organization, founded by American Water - the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the United States - is dedicated to benefiting community initiatives across Virginia.

Celebrating the Grantees

The Foundation awarded a total of $77,199 to four remarkable organizations that are dedicated to enhancing environmental education and support in the communities they operate. The honored recipients include:
  • - Wilderness Kids Alexandria Inc
  • - Friendship Veterans Fire Association of Alexandria Virginia
  • - James River Association
  • - Jessica Ann Moore Foundation

Jerry Casagrande, the Executive Director of Wilderness Kids, expressed gratitude for the grant. He noted how vital these funds are for promoting environmental stewardship where teenagers from underprivileged backgrounds can learn and connect with nature. Their programs, focused on the Chesapeake Watershed, aim to impart skills in activities such as swimming, paddling, and sailing, illustrating the profound connection between personal development and environmental conservation.

Impact on Communities

Virginia American Water President Laura Runkle highlighted the positive influences these grantees have on the state. "These outstanding organizations are making a meaningful change in our communities — from teaching youth about environmental conservation to enhancing the support for local firefighters," Runkle noted. The commitment reflected in these grants showcases the utility’s investment in the well-being of Virginia’s residents and natural resources.

The Water and Environment grant is part of the Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program, which emphasizes three core pillars of giving: Water, People, and Communities. The Foundation’s goal is to aid projects centered around clean water access, climate education, and the promotion of water-related recreational activities.

Foundation's Vision & Future Goals

Carrie Williams, President of the American Water Charitable Foundation, reiterated the organization's commitment to fostering a sustainable environment through its grants. She elaborated, "By funding projects aligned with protecting water resources and ensuring clean water availability, we are investing in the future of our communities. The impact of these grants is to create a sustainable environment for generations to come."
