Exploring Montana's Spring Skiing: An Adventure Awaits in the Mountains

Enjoying Spring Skiing in Montana

As winter transitions to spring, Montana's stunning ski resorts are flourishing thanks to significant snowfall throughout the season. With many ski areas preparing to stay open until early April, there’s no better time for families and adventure seekers to embrace the thrill of skiing. Here’s what to look forward to as you plan your spring break in the beautiful mountains of Montana.

Montana is known for its unique terrain, which draws late-season storms that blanket the mountains in fresh snow. These snowfalls are often followed by clear blue skies, creating the perfect combination for skiing enthusiasts. "Fewer layers and more sunshine make spring skiing in Montana special," remarked Paul Green, the director of the Montana Department of Commerce. Families can celebrate spring break with a peaceful skiing experience away from the crowds, all while enjoying the stunning views of the snow-capped peaks.

Highlights from the Ski Season

The current ski season has brought exceptional snowfall, with Showdown Montana collecting an impressive 5 feet of snow within just five days in early January. Meanwhile, the Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area has tallied over 18 feet at its summit so far. Several resorts, including Whitefish Mountain Resort and Big Sky Resort, have also reported remarkable visitation numbers and significant upgrades, such as the debut of the world's longest eight-passenger chairlift, the Madison 8.

"It's been an epic start to the season, and we’re anticipating a fantastic remainder of it," shared Avery Patrick, vice president and marketing director at Showdown Montana. With ample snow and a lively atmosphere, now is the perfect opportunity for skiers and snowboarders to relish winter sports and the vibrant resort culture.

Rejuvenation in Natural Hot Springs

Those planning a ski trip can complement their outdoor activities with a visit to Montana's natural hot springs. After a long day on the slopes, visitors can relax and rejuvenate at locations like Jackson Hot Springs (close to Lost Trail Ski Area), Elkhorn Hot Springs (near Maverick Mountain Resort), and Quinn's Hot Springs Resort (near Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area). Not only do these hot springs provide a cozy escape, but they also offer a unique way to experience Montana's natural beauty.

Community Events Celebrating the Season

Spring skiing in Montana also comes with a variety of community-focused events that celebrate the end of the ski season. These gatherings not only offer fun activities but are often set during some of the best skiing conditions of the year. Visitors can look forward to events like Lost Trail’s SmashLife Banked Slalom on March 8, Red Lodge’s Throwback ThrowBIG Competition on March 15, and the Big Sky Resort’s Closing Day Celebration on April 27.

Summer Skiing Opportunities

For those eager to extend their skiing adventures into the summer, Montana features the Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area, which opens its slopes from late May through July (depending on weather conditions). With a sprawling 600 acres of skiable terrain ranging from gentle slopes to challenging pitches, the summer offering draws discerning skiers eager to experience the thrill of skiing even in warmer months.
