Alfa Laval Teams Up in One Water Consortium to Tackle Water Crisis in Europe
In a significant stride towards addressing critical water issues in Europe, Alfa Laval has proudly joined the One Water consortium, taking a central role as a core partner. This collaboration is aimed at tackling various pressing challenges related to water, including scarcity, droughts, floods, and the degradation of both marine and freshwater ecosystems. As a leading entity in technological innovation, the One Water consortium participates in an initiative backed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), which is establishing a new Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) centered on hydraulics.
The EIT, an institution under the European Union, seeks to manage a portfolio of KICs that address key facets of sustainability, such as digitalization, energy, food, and health, with the new Water KIC focusing specifically on three fundamental challenges: addressing water scarcity and droughts, combating flooding, and promoting a circular and sustainable blue economy. Eline Suijlen, the Water Industry Manager at Alfa Laval, emphasized the alignment of this participation with the company's mission to drive positive impact on a global scale. "Solving water challenges is crucial for our planet," Suijlen noted, adding that while Europe excels in developing concepts and patents, it must do better in transforming these solutions into actual business operations.
The One Water consortium represents a diverse group, bringing together public sector entities such as research institutions and universities, along with Alfa Laval’s unique expertise in corporate water stewardship and maritime water management solutions. In preparation for the consortium's bid application, which is due on June 17, 2025, Alfa Laval has actively engaged ten representatives from various sectors within the company in discussion surrounding the project.
The selection of the winning consortium for the future Water KIC will take place in the third quarter of this year, with the EIT expected to announce its final decision by year's end. This move not only emphasizes the essential partnership between public and private sectors but also highlights how Alfa Laval’s extensive experience can propel innovative solutions forward in the realm of water resource management.
