Ontario International Airport Raises Significant Funds for Local USO to Support Military Families
Ontario International Airport Raises Funds for the USO
In a remarkable display of community support, the Ontario International Airport (ONT) recently held its much-anticipated annual 5K at the Runway event. This year’s race not only transformed the National Guard hangar into a lively racecourse but also succeeded in raising a staggering $53,773.18 for the United Service Organizations (USO). This amount marks a significant increase of over $20,000 from last year's fundraising efforts.
Held on February 8, the event attracted nearly 2,000 runners, walkers, and enthusiastic supporters from the Inland Empire region. Officials from the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) were on hand to present the check to USO representatives, reaffirming their commitment to support the brave men and women who serve in the military. The heartfelt gesture served not only as a financial contribution but also as a symbolic thank you to servicemembers and their families.
Alan D. Wapner, President of the OIAA Board of Commissioners, expressed great pride in the event, emphasizing that “every step taken during this event is a gesture of appreciation to the men and women in uniform.” The airport has been recognized as a welcoming space for military personnel year-round, showcasing a commitment to both their comfort and the community's gratitude.
The 5K at the Runway events have become a highlight of the airport's annual calendar, blending athletic challenge with a noble cause. Participants not only engage in healthy competition but also contribute to a greater mission—supporting the USO’s essential services. The race's unique setting near the airport’s active runways sets the backdrop for a one-of-a-kind experience, filled with camaraderie and community spirit.
Curt Hagman, Vice President of the OIAA Board, highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “This event is about more than running – it’s about rallying together for a meaningful cause.” His gratitude extended to the runners, sponsors, and volunteers whose collective efforts made this year’s 5K another milestone for both ONT and the USO.
The USO center at Ontario International Airport has been operational since 2006, providing vital services to thousands of military travelers from nearby installations, including Fort Irwin, MCLB Barstow, and March Air Reserve Base. This center is open every day of the year, serving as a sanctuary where service members can find rest, support, and community.
As more travelers choose Ontario International for their journeys, the airport continues to position itself as a beloved mid-sized hub in Southern California. According to J.D. Power’s recent North America Airport Satisfaction Study, ONT has emerged at the forefront of customer satisfaction, drawing passengers from all over the region.
The OIAA, formed in August 2012, plays a crucial role in managing and developing the airport to benefit not just travelers but the entire Southern California economy. Wapner reiterated the organization’s dedication, stating that their mission goes beyond just transportation—it's about supporting the community and its heroes.
In conclusion, events like the 5K at the Runway are a testament to the power of community collaboration and commitment to honoring those who protect us. With each year, the Ontario International Airport continues to embrace opportunities that foster connections, support local causes, and uplift the spirit of service in all forms.
Every run, every donation, and every conversation held at the airport contributes to the collective memory of gratitude we owe to our servicemembers, making the ONT a beacon of support for the military families it proudly serves.
