ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2025: A Landmark in Tokyo's Cultural Scene
The prestigious Projection Mapping Tokyo Award has recently awarded the ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2025 event an excellent prize, highlighting its significant contribution to Tokyo's nighttime economy and cultural diversity. This groundbreaking event represents the very first use of projection mapping on historical structures within the context of Senso-ji Temple's 1,400-year heritage. Produced by Hitohata Inc., led by President Takeaki Higashiyama, ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2025 merges rich traditions with cutting-edge digital technology, offering visitors an unforgettable experience.
The captivating showcase included stunning projections on key cultural artifacts such as the Hōzōmon Gate, and the Five-Story Pagoda, as well as the designated Important Cultural Property, Nitenmon Gate. The theme centered around the harmonious fusion of Senso-ji's historic narrative with modern artistic expressions, bringing to life traditional motifs like the "Dance of the Golden Dragon", the guardian Nio statues, and the deities of wind and thunder. In addition, for the first time, visitors were treated to vibrant digital animations of the normally private large ema, or wooden plaques, housed on the temple grounds.
This ambitious project not only attracted enormous media coverage across television and newspapers but also enlivened the surrounding community as visitors flocked to witness the stunning performances. ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2025 played a significant role in promoting nighttime tourism through its special viewing events held concurrently with the projections, enriching the visitor experience of Tokyo's historical narrative and nighttime allure.
Judges have praised the endeavor for showcasing Tokyo’s cultural diversity through the innovative use of light in its historical spaces. The artistic quality, grounded in professional expertise, ensured the event would capture the imagination of both local and international audiences alike. Importantly, by blending regional traditions with new technologies, the initiative has revitalized local economies at night, making it a powerful model for future events.
Hitohata has expressed an aspiration to expand the projection mapping experience across Japan, utilizing other historical and cultural landmarks, thereby crafting profound experiences that resonate across generations and nationalities while contributing to the revitalization of local nighttime economies.
This event was supported by the Cultural Affairs Agency’s fiscal year 2025 subsidy for utilizing cultural resources across Japan. Future iterations of ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS are anticipated in the fall of 2026, with details to be announced on official platforms.
