Construction Begins at the Catclaw Solar and Storage Facility

On June 11, 2025, DESRI announced a significant milestone in renewable energy development with the commencement of construction for the Catclaw Solar and Storage project located in Buckeye, Arizona. With an impressive capacity of 205 megawatts (MWac) and a storage system totaling 1,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), this project is set to bolster the state's energy needs significantly.

The achievement of financial notice to proceed (FNTP) marks a crucial step for DESRI and its partners. Following the acquisition of the project from Avantus in 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 29, 2025, bringing together stakeholders committed to sustainable energy solutions. Bob Schoenherr, the Chief Strategy Officer at DESRI, expressed enthusiasm for the project's initiation, noting that it would not only reinforce Arizona's energy infrastructure but is also poised to start operations in 2026.

The facility will coordinate with Arizona Public Service (APS) through a 20-year power purchase agreement, anticipating a yearly output sufficient to power around 40,000 homes. As demand for renewable energy sources continues to rise, the Catclaw project is designed to fulfill growing electrical requirements across Arizona, particularly during peak demand periods.

Cliff Graham, CEO of Avantus, emphasized the collaborative efforts underlying this project, which involved extensive teamwork between DESRI, APS, and local authorities in Buckeye. His comments reflect the broader commitment to driving clean energy initiatives that create jobs and strengthen local communities while providing resilient and affordable energy solutions.

The construction phase of the project will be managed by RES, a leading firm in engineering, procurement, and construction. They will work closely with high-voltage EPC Services Company and rely on Tesla for battery storage systems. Once operational, Invenergy Services will oversee ongoing maintenance and operational tasks, ensuring the facility runs smoothly and efficiently.

In addition to bolstering the local grid, the Catclaw Solar and Storage project also represents a significant investment in Arizona's energy future, financed through several major banking institutions including BNP Paribas, Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale, and others. Officials from APS have underscored the importance of diversifying energy resources to maintain reliable service levels for their customers, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable development.

Mayor Eric Orsborn of Buckeye praised the exceptional cooperation the city experienced with DESRI in integrating the project's design within the local landscape and ensuring environmental sustainability.
