Nel ASA Secures $7 Million Order for PEM Electrolyser Equipment
In a significant move for the renewable energy sector, Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of Nel ASA, has announced a purchase order valued at approximately $7 million. This order is intended for PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyser equipment designed to produce hydrogen at a public utility in the United States. The recipient of this equipment is the Douglas County Public Utility District (DCPUD) located in East Wenatchee, Washington.
DCPUD, which is a publicly regulated utility, has played a pivotal role in pioneering state legislation that facilitates the production and sale of renewable hydrogen by utilities. The integration of the PEM electrolyser will not only support hydrogen production but also enable the utility to manage excess power more effectively. Instead of frequently adjusting the output of their hydroelectric generators, DCPUD can utilize the electrolyser to harness surplus energy, aiding in grid stability.
This innovative approach minimizes the need for mechanical adjustments, thus reducing wear on turbine units and associated infrastructure. Furthermore, the hydrogen produced through this electrolyser can be employed in various high-value applications, enhancing its utility and economic viability.
Partnership and Impact
“We're thrilled to collaborate with a forward-thinking partner like DCPUD,” commented Todd Cartwright, Nel’s Chief Commercial Officer. “This will mark the first green hydrogen facility we have provided that is owned and operated by a public utility.” The flexibility offered by Nel's PEM electrolysers allows DCPUD to synchronize energy load with demand and provide a reliable source of clean fuel.
Gary Ivory, General Manager of DCPUD, expressed enthusiasm toward this partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with Nel Hydrogen will allow us to introduce renewable hydrogen to our local community, significantly benefiting our Wells Hydroelectric Project and promoting the adoption of hydrogen technology in our area.”
The purchase order specifies the delivery of containerized PEM equipment. Notably, the stacks for these electrolysers will be produced at Nel's manufacturing facility located in Wallingford, Connecticut. The entire system is expected to become operational by the first half of 2027, setting a benchmark in the region's renewable energy landscape.
