FirstEnergy Foundation Spreads Holiday Cheer with New Grants for Local Nonprofits

The holiday season often serves as a reminder of the importance of giving and supporting one another, a sentiment echoed by the FirstEnergy Foundation's recent initiative. This year, the Foundation has chosen to contribute a substantial $40,000 in funding through its "Gifts of the Season" grants. These grants have been awarded to two dedicated nonprofit organizations that provide critical support to families in need in West Virginia and Maryland.

Grants Allocated to Beneficial Nonprofits

The two recipients of this year's grants are the Ronald McDonald House Morgantown and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, Maryland, each receiving $20,000. This funding is aimed at bolstering initiatives that play vital roles in their respective communities, particularly during this challenging time of year.

Ronald McDonald House Morgantown: The grant will specifically support the Jacob Johnson Family Lodging Fund, which provides a comfortable space for around 42 families each year. This facility offers much-needed accommodation and support for families traveling from afar as their children receive medical care. More than 200 families benefit annually from the shelter, which reflects the organization’s commitment to easing the burdens of those in critical situations.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, Md.: The funds provided will enhance learning opportunities for approximately 150 children, allowing the organization to continue fostering positive mentor-mentee relationships that have a lasting impact. For over six decades, this organization has empowered youth through personal connections, driving home the importance of support and mentorship in child development.

A Commitment to Community Impact

Jim Myers, President of FirstEnergy's West Virginia and Maryland operations, expressed the essence of the organization's mission during this season of giving. He stated, "This season reminds us how important it is to come together and support our neighbors in ways that have an impact. By supporting organizations that provide food, shelter, and life-changing opportunities, we're helping families find comfort in times of need and empowering our youth to thrive."

This year's grants mark a significant milestone for the FirstEnergy Foundation, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the "Gifts of the Season" program. Since its inception in 2016, the program has been a beacon of hope and support across various local nonprofit sectors, delivering a cumulative total of over $1.2 million in grants to various initiatives. The Foundation emphasizes its commitment to community service and inclusion, highlighting its adaptability to meet evolving community needs.

Ongoing Community Support and Involvement

In 2025 alone, the FirstEnergy Foundation has allocated over $5.5 million in support of community initiatives across its service area, further solidifying its role as a crucial supporter of local nonprofits. With its steadfast dedication to integrity, safety, and operational excellence, FirstEnergy continues to foster a strong relationship with the communities it serves, ensuring that crucial services are available to those in need.
