Tianjin University Celebrates 131 Years of Innovation and Excellence

Tianjin University: A Legacy of Excellence

On October 2, 2026, Tianjin University (TJU), recognized as the first modern university in China, proudly celebrates its 131st anniversary. This milestone not only commemorates its rich history but also showcases its relentless pursuit of innovation and contribution to social progress. Through a combination of visionary leadership and unwavering commitment, TJU continues to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

Shaping Visionaries for the Future

The 131st year of TJU is marked by an intense focus on nurturing visionary talents. As a leading institution in the National Task Force of Emerging Engineering Education, the university has unveiled the "TJU Plan 3.0". This future-oriented framework is designed to prepare skilled professionals to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Aligning with the evolution of future industries, TJU has strategically positioned itself in 11 cutting-edge fields, including artificial intelligence and embodied intelligence. The university leads the nation as the first to offer undergraduate programs in brain-computer interface technology and biofabrication.

To cultivate exceptional young researchers, TJU has initiated the "U35 Plan," which accelerates opportunities for outstanding scholars under the age of 35 to achieve tenure-track positions. This initiative acknowledges their future potential and fosters a dynamic research environment where brilliant minds can thrive.

Bridging Labs and Impacting Lives

The convergence of top national talent, industry experts, and leading enterprises has fostered a robust innovation ecosystem at TJU. This ecosystem has resulted in significant achievements, particularly in the medical technology sector. The "Shengong-Shengao" system became the first brain-computer interface medical device approved in China for the diagnosis of cognitive disorders. Developed by a team led by Professor Liu Xiuyun, this groundbreaking system reduces the time required to diagnose conditions like hydrocephalus from several days to just 30 minutes. Additionally, over 20 devices from the "Shengong" series have successfully transitioned from laboratory development to clinical services, providing tangible benefits to thousands of patients.

With high-precision measurement technologies and energy storage solutions, coupled with national platforms like the National Centre for Seismic Engineering Simulation, the philosophy at TJU emphasizes reaching scientific peaks while staying deeply connected to real-world needs. This commitment was acknowledged in 2025, when TJU researchers contributed significantly to five National Science and Technology Awards.

Furthermore, the university's academic excellence is globally recognized, with three disciplines—Chemistry, Engineering, and Materials Science—ranking among the top 1% worldwide according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI).

A Commitment to a Better Future

By focusing on strategic hubs, a talent-centered approach, and a steadfast commitment to human welfare, Tianjin University, as it celebrates 131 years, not only acknowledges its illustrious past but actively works towards constructing a better future. With an unwavering dedication to innovation and education, TJU stands as a beacon of progress, inspiring the next generation of thinkers and problem solvers.
