About the Exhibition

This exhibition marks a significant milestone in the career of photographer Taichi Kozawa, who has spent years showcasing his work in unique locations worldwide. For the first time, he focuses on Japan in this exhibition, specifically on the remote reaches of Hokkaido. Captivated by the region's stark beauty, Kozawa dedicated over 200 days in 2024 to living there. He beautifully captures the transitions of the seasons, the cycles of life, and the land's rich history, all expressed through his signature black-and-white style. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the various 'flows' that his serene and striking monochrome prints convey.

Artist's Message

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself at a crossroads, having lost touch with my subjects while previously focusing on overseas photography. With time on my hands, I traveled across Japan, ultimately discovering the enchanting landscapes of Hokkaido’s farthest reaches. In this raw and unspoiled environment, I rose before the sun and traced the stars, fully aware of nature’s rapid changes—from one season to the next in just two weeks. To ensure I didn’t miss any nuances of this stunning locale, I established a base in Hokkaido, determined to engage deeply with the natural world.

As I roamed the coasts and forests, I witnessed the birth and disappearance of countless lives. During this phase of dual-location life, my focus expanded to embrace the local culture and history. Despite Hokkaido's harsh climate which eliminated the start of rice cultivation during the Yayoi period, its ancestors subsisted on the rich bounties of nature—chief among them, salmon, a practice that continues to this day. The Ainu people referred to themselves as 'Kayi,' meaning 'those born of this land', a term that eventually became part of the name 'Hokkaido'. The migration from Honshu has woven layers of history into the present landscape. As I pressed the shutter, I reflected on the myriad emotions lying beneath the surface, revealing Japan’s plethora of captivating subjects waiting to be rediscovered.
