JTB and Airbnb Collaborate for Sustainable Local Growth
In a significant move towards fostering sustainable community development,
JTB (Japan Travel Bureau), a major travel agency based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, and
Airbnb Japan, headquartered in Shinjuku, have partnered to launch the
Local Future Workshop. This initiative aims to address local challenges and create sustainable value through collaboration with various industries, businesses, and organizations.
The Essence of the Local Future Workshop
The
Local Future Workshop, effective immediately, is designed as a collaborative framework wherein JTB and Airbnb will lead while integrating the expertise and resources of multiple partners. This endeavor transcends traditional tourism support by focusing on building a lasting “sustainable vibrancy” that connects local livelihoods to future prospects.
This initiative emerged from discussions held since the announcement of their comprehensive partnership in January 2025. The dialogue revealed that the primary requirement for many regions is not merely tourism support but rather an approach that fosters sustainable community engagement and growth. Both companies recognized a mutual understanding: supporting local life as a pathway to the future is paramount.
A Collaborative Model for Regional Contribution
The workshop invites companies that are willing to engage in regional development efforts by leveraging their specialized skills and resources. It is an open framework that welcomes not only those already active in community revitalization but also those who aspire to contribute. This inclusive approach is key to nurturing local initiatives and implementing solutions that align with community needs.
As opposed to mere theoretical discussions, the Local Future Workshop emphasizes practical engagement. Companies now have real opportunities to apply their services and technology to address actual local challenges.
Nurturing the Future of Vibrancy
This collaborative effort aims to create a diverse range of vibrancy through the interaction of partner companies, local communities, residents, and travelers. By joining forces, all contributors can generate unique and sustainable community experiences that resonate with local culture and citizen aspirations.
Case Study: Initiatives in Kamikuni Town, Hokkaido
The first implementation of the Local Future Workshop will take place in Kamikuni Town, located in Hokkaido's Hiyama District, starting April 2025. The initiative includes DIY activities and workshops involving local residents and high school students, as well as partnerships with businesses for renovation and facility enhancement. The aim is to rejuvenate vacant properties, transforming them into thriving accommodation options.
The Mayor of Kamikuni, Shogo Kudo, emphasized the transformation of underutilized assets into valuable resources through contributions from outside knowledge. He stated, “With the insights gained, we have been able to perceive these assets as resources and are progressing towards re-utilization. Our goal is to establish approximately 30 to 40 suitable accommodations throughout the town, creating a comprehensive framework for welcoming visitors.”
Future Development Plans
Looking ahead, the Local Future Workshop aims to expand to 125 regions nationwide by 2028. The focus will be on areas where there is a demand-supply imbalance in stay environments. The four key themes guiding this expansion include:
1.
Renewable Energy Areas: Establishing accommodation infrastructure linked with renewable energy projects (e.g., Kamikuni Town).
2.
Industrial Cluster Regions: Supporting stay options for human resources in industrial parks (e.g., Ishikari City, Hokkaido).
3.
Disaster Response Regions: Utilizing vacant properties as shelters or temporary housing (e.g., Takana Town, Miyazaki Prefecture).
4.
Islands and Adjacent Areas: Creating exchange hubs for tourists and potential residents (e.g., Setouchi Town, Kagoshima Prefecture).
Recruiting Collaborative Companies
The Local Future Workshop is now actively recruiting businesses and organizations to participate. Various entities, including
Dai Nippon Printing, and
Muji room essentials from Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., have already expressed their commitment. Other partners from Airbnb’s network include
CCC Marketing Convenience Club and
Sompo Japan Insurance Inc.. The involvement of new like-minded companies will help amplify JTB's tourism expertise and Airbnb's global knowledge in home-sharing to elevate local values, establishing a model for sustainable community creation nationwide.
