Masaharu Sato's Solo Exhibition 'REAL≒UNREAL' to Open at Art Cruise Gallery

Masaharu Sato's Solo Exhibition 'REAL≒UNREAL'

Starting on July 1, 2026, Masaharu Sato will showcase his solo exhibition titled 'REAL≒UNREAL' at the Art Cruise Gallery, a venue operated by Baycrew’s in Toranomon, Tokyo. As the 13th exhibition in their series, this event promises to delve deep into the themes that define Sato's remarkable work, which transcends the boundaries of contemporary art, film, animation, and media art.

Masaharu Sato, born in Oita in 1973, gained recognition as an artist who skillfully navigates between the real and surreal. His works often prompt viewers to question their perceptions: Is what we see truly there, or merely a representation? Utilizing a technique called rotoscope, Sato captures everyday scenes on video and subsequently traces them to reconstruct the imagery. This approach lends a dreamlike quality to his art, creating a quiet yet unsettling atmosphere that explores various themes, including existence, absence, memory, anxiety, and the concept of time.

In this upcoming exhibition, Sato aims to convey a strong sense of poetry that flows through the question, “Does what we see genuinely exist?” By crossing the boundaries of different categories of art, he invites audiences to confront the ambiguity between their recalled selves and their present identities. The absence of dramatic events in his portrayal of ordinary landscapes speaks volumes, compelling viewers to reflect on their own experiences and memories.
