Arevon Celebrates Progress on Cormorant Energy Storage Project

Arevon Energy, Inc., a prominent player in the American energy sector, recently held an event to celebrate the substantial construction advancements of its Cormorant Energy Storage Project in Daly City, California. The facility, which boasts a capacity of 250 megawatts (MW) and 1,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), is set to begin operations in 2027. When operational, it will have the capability to supply energy to 321,000 homes for four hours during peak demand periods.

The Cormorant project embodies a strategic approach to energy management by storing electricity during low demand and supplying it when demand peaks, thereby bolstering the reliability of California's electric grid. The project is being developed and will be owned and operated by Arevon, in collaboration with the Renewables group of Primoris Services Corporation. At its peak, the development will employ around 175 workers and utilize lithium iron phosphate batteries known for their safety and longevity.

Over its lifecycle, Cormorant is projected to contribute an impressive $73 million to local property tax revenues used for schools, infrastructure, and public services. Additionally, it is expected to conserve more than 4.2 billion gallons of water and cut down carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 174,000 metric tons each year.

The celebration included various stakeholders such as state officials, local leaders, labor and business representatives, as well as community members. Key speakers included Arevon's CEO Justin Johnson and Molly Sterkel, a Director at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). They emphasized the importance of the facility in supporting California’s energy goals while strengthening the local economy through job creation and revenue generation.

Johnson commented, “Cormorant represents the critical energy infrastructure needed to meet the increasing electricity demands while ensuring grid reliability. We are proud to support a more resilient and affordable energy future for California.”

Molly Sterkel from the CPUC highlighted the significant advancements California is making towards achieving a clean and reliable electric grid, calling Cormorant a paradigm for addressing ongoing energy challenges and emphasizing the role of battery storage in complementing the decline in solar power generation during peak demand.

Mayor Glenn Sylvester of Daly City remarked on the project’s potential to enhance the local electric grid significantly and noted its expected economic benefits. He expressed pride in Daly City's role in advancing the state's energy infrastructure.

Cormorant also has a long-term contract with MCE, a community choice electricity provider that serves over 1.8 million residents. The project's expansion from an initial 188 MW/752 MWh capacity to its current specifications demonstrates the growing needs of the energy market, bolstered by MCE's commitment to sourcing additional power.

In addition to addressing energy needs, Arevon is committed to giving back to the Daly City area through partnerships and community engagement.
