KOSEN Hosts 16th Semiconductor Materials and Devices Forum
The independent administrative institution, the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), is taking significant steps to address the critical shortage of skilled talent in the semiconductor industry. On October 18 and 19, 2025, the Kumamoto National College of Technology will host the 16th Semiconductor Materials and Devices Forum at Kyushu University’s Chikushi Campus and the Fukuoka International Center. This event aims to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the semiconductor field.
With approximately 500 attendees expected, including KOSEN students, university students, and researchers from across Japan, the forum will feature a blend of academic presentations and cutting-edge technology discussions. Day one is dedicated to student-led research presentations related to semiconductors, while day two will focus on seminars conducted by prominent researchers from industry and academic institutions, alongside informal networking opportunities between students and professionals.
Forum Overview
The Semiconductor Materials and Devices Forum has been an annual gathering since its inception in 2010 by Kumamoto National College of Technology. This initiative concentrates on enhancing the research and educational capabilities of KOSEN students, facilitating communication and collaboration with university and graduate students. As of 2016, the forum has expanded to include career education support, hosting seminars that connect students with industry.

KOSEN's Collaboration in Talent Development
Since FY2020, KOSEN has been actively implementing a project aimed at nurturing ‘Society 5.0-type Future Technology Talent.’ This initiative comprises two major projects: GEAR 5.0, focusing on enhancing education for social implementation of emerging technologies, and COMPASS 5.0, which aims to develop educational curricula for next-generation foundational technologies. These projects adapt to the evolving social and economic structures of Society 5.0, fostering students who are proactive in addressing local and global challenges while maintaining lifelong learning habits.
In addition, COMPASS 5.0 comprises seven fields, including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Robotics, IoT, and Semiconductor technologies. KOSEN collaborates with industry and governmental bodies to reflect the latest trends into educational frameworks, supporting both national initiatives and local characteristics to foster talent through industry-academia collaboration.
Kumamoto National College of Technology, as a cornerstone of COMPASS 5.0 in the semiconductor domain, emphasizes education that empowers learners to create innovative products and services from silicon semiconductors.
This 16th Semiconductor Materials and Devices Forum is a vital part of these talent development efforts.
