In an exciting move for the pet food industry, Big Idea Ventures, in collaboration with Mars Petcare and partners AAK, Bühler, Givaudan, and Ingredion, has announced the three startups selected for the 2026 Next Generation Pet Food Program. This initiative is in its third year and aims to promote innovation by identifying promising materials that minimize the environmental footprint of pet food ingredients.
The 2026 program witnessed an impressive response, receiving 83 applications from 33 countries, with nearly half of these coming from the Asia-Pacific region. This surge in applicants reflects a deliberate expansion of the program in Asia, highlighting the region’s increasing significance in ingredient innovation and sustainability.
This year’s applicants faced a more rigorous selection process requiring a higher level of commercial maturity. The cohort reveals a notable shift in focus towards alternative ingredient innovation, showcasing a progression from proof-of-concept solutions to those ready for real-world supply chains.
Over 50% of the applications centered on dry proteins, with a significant portion also involving wet proteins, fats, and oils. These were produced through a variety of methods including plant-based processing, fermentation, and insect farming, demonstrating the diverse approaches taken by applicants to address sustainability challenges.
The three outstanding companies chosen for this year’s program include:
- - EcoBean: Based in Poland, EcoBean transforms spent coffee grounds from industrial production into valuable ingredients suitable for cosmetics, food, and pet applications.
- - Loopworm: This Indian biotech firm specializes in high-performance protein and fat ingredients derived from silkworms, utilizing proprietary technology to enhance production efficiency.
- - Space Ark Biomedical: A Taiwanese company that upcycles okara and brewer's spent grain into functional protein ingredients through enzyme technology and precision fermentation.
Together, these companies exemplify innovative methods such as side-stream valorization, insect biotechnology, and fermentation to create new protein sources and functional ingredients for pet nutrition, drawing on underutilized or abundant feedstocks in the existing supply chains.
Elisabetta Pierangelo, VP of Research and Development at Mars Pet Nutrition, emphasized that the program is a unique opportunity to unite various domains, including ingredient innovators, scientists, manufacturers, and industry experts, to accelerate innovations in pet food solutions with a lower environmental footprint.
Andrew D. Ive, Founder and Managing General Partner at Big Idea Ventures, added, "The future of pet nutrition will undoubtedly be shaped by technologies that reduce environmental impacts while ensuring performance standards remain high. The strength of this program is in the collaborative ecosystem it fosters. By uniting groundbreaking science with industry expertise and strategic partnerships, we can help mitigate risks associated with innovative solutions and validate their market potential."
Each selected startup will gain access to expert guidance, research and development facilities, tailored opportunities, and a cash prize of $15,000 to refine their innovations. The culmination of this year’s program will take place at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit scheduled for October 27–29, 2026, in Singapore, where the startups will present their projects to a global audience of industry leaders, investors, and key decision-makers.
