Pure Michigan Aims to Enhance Culinary Recognition and Agritourism Growth

Pure Michigan's Culinary Vision

Pure Michigan, the esteemed travel brand dedicated to promoting the Great Lakes State, is setting its sights on enhancing Michigan's culinary reputation. With the recent James Beard Award nomination of The Cook's House restaurant, co-chefs Jennifer Blakeslee and Eric Patterson are helping put Michigan's dining scene on the map. The goal is to ensure that the state, traditionally known for its Detroit-style pizza and coney dogs, also gains recognition for its chefs and vibrant agricultural offerings.

A Rich Agricultural Landscape

Michigan's fertile farmlands, orchards, and vineyards, combined with its expansive waterways, create a backdrop perfect for local and fresh dining experiences. Kelly Wolgamott, Vice President of Pure Michigan, highlights the state's diverse food scene, stating, "People know Michigan for its incredible freshwater beaches and idyllic fall escapes, but they might not be aware of our Traverse Wine Coast or the talented chefs migrating from major metropolitan areas like Chicago and New York. We want to invite travelers to experience a culinary journey in Pure Michigan."

Diverse Culinary Experiences

In Michigan, visitors have the opportunity to taste a variety of spotlight ingredients that represent different regions of the state. Northern Michigan offers exceptional white fish and wines, while Grand Rapids is known for craft beers and Mexican cuisine. Meanwhile, Metro Detroit showcases an array of East African, Asian, and Lebanese dishes. The local food scene thrives on a recurrent theme: ingredients that are grown, cultivated, brewed, caught, and foraged within the state itself.

Recent years have seen Michigan's culinary talents increasingly recognized by prestigious culinary institutions and competitions. In the past 35 years, over 150 chefs from Michigan have received nominations for James Beard Awards, reflecting the high standard of artistry in the state's culinary landscape. Michiganders celebrate their culinary heritage through various food-centric festivals throughout the year, such as the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City and the Michigan Honey Festival in Corunna. These highlight local produce, craft beverages, and the warmth of community spirit.

Unveiling Traverse City Food & Wine Festival

Adding momentum to Michigan's culinary story, the inaugural Traverse City Food & Wine Festival is set to occur from August 20-24, 2025. This multi-day event will feature notable chefs and culinary personalities showcasing the region's abundant agricultural offerings and creativity. Events include a Harvest Blessing Ceremony and cooking demonstrations, celebrating the intersection of high-quality food and community connection—an experience that many travelers and locals alike will cherish.

Beyond destination dining, Pure Michigan collaborates annually with local producers to create Pure Michigan-branded food and beverages. Collaborations include popular local beers from Short's Brewing, iconic pies from Grand Traverse Pie Company, and delicious fudge in partnership with Mackinac Island's Ryba's.
