Masseto Announces Its Exquisite 2023 Vintage, Available Soon
Masseto Unveils the 2023 Vintage
Masseto, renowned for its exceptional wines produced in the heart of Bolgheri, Italy, has made an exciting announcement: the release of its 2023 vintage. Grapes from this vintage will be available starting October 1, 2026, captivating wine lovers both locally and internationally.
This year marks another milestone for the vineyard, which has been producing outstanding wines since 1986, all stemming from a unique terroir situated on a hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vineyard's rare blue clay soil, formed during the Pliocene era, coupled with the beneficial coastal breezes and the illuminating light of Bolgheri, creates the perfect conditions for cultivating grapes that embody depth, elegance, and complexity.
Masseto's Technical Director, Marco Balsimelli, reflected on the challenges and rewards of the 2023 growing season, which started off with a mild winter. As spring arrived, consistent rains replenished water reserves, prompting the vineyard team to select vines carefully, ensuring optimal growth. "Nature set us a challenge that we embraced, transforming it into a valuable experience," Balsimelli noted, emphasizing the meticulous labor that goes into each vintage.
The summer brought bright and sunny days without extreme temperature fluctuations, which allowed the grapes to gradually ripen, promoting both concentration and harmony. In late August, rains returned, followed by cool nights, which formed vital conditions for developing aromatic complexity while maintaining the freshness and acidity that Masseto is known for. Balsimelli praised 2023 as a vintage abundant with energy, grace, and delightful satisfaction.
The harvest season commenced on September 6 and wrapped up by October 5. Hand-harvesting ensured that each grape bunch was collected with the utmost care, packed into 15-kilogram crates for transport to the winery, conveniently located just minutes from the vineyard. Upon arriving at the winery, the grapes underwent destemming and gentle crushing before being transferred using gravity into concrete vats.
Each vineyard parcel was vinified separately, allowing every unique flavor profile to emerge before undergoing malolactic fermentation and aging in oak barriques—80 percent of which were new. "Every plot possesses its own characteristic essence, so we vinify them independently to allow full expression. Only at the blending stage do these distinct personalities unite to create Masseto's signature wine," explains Balsimelli.
After aging for 24 months in barriques, the final blend was bottled and allowed further maturation in the peaceful winery cellar before its eagerly awaited release. The 2023 vintage reveals a stunning deep ruby red color, with an aroma rich in dark, juicy fruits, which is complemented by notes of black pepper, tobacco, and graphite. On the palate, the wine showcases impressive depth and freshness, with smooth tannins enhancing its elegance. The perfect acidity brings lift and a refreshing quality, making Masseto 2023 a wine of remarkable character and a promising longevity.
“Masseto 2023 is vibrantly balanced—a wine that speaks with clarity and possesses a long future ahead,” concluded Balsimelli. Whether you're a seasoned collector or an occasional wine drinker, this vintage promises to be a standout, melding tradition and innovation from one of Italy’s proudest vineyards.
