Hands-On Japanese Cooking Experience
Kenko Mayonnaise Co., Ltd., based in Suginami, Tokyo, is thrilled to announce the opening of registrations for its exciting cooking classes hosted at our kitchen, Kitchen Space 831. Run by professional chefs experienced in developing menus, these classes are designed for everyone, from beginners to cooking enthusiasts. This winter, join us as we explore the art of making traditional Ehomaki, a type of sushi roll applicable in celebrating the Setsubun festival!
What is Ehomaki?
Ehomaki is a sushi roll enjoyed on Setsubun, a day marking the onset of spring. It is believed that eating this roll facing the lucky direction of the year (this year, it’s south-southeast) will bring happiness and good fortune. Traditionally, these rolls contain seven different fillings, symbolizing the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan. Participants in our class will have the opportunity to make two rolls filled with a delightful mix of ingredients. The fillings we will use include green leaf lettuce, carrots, burdock root, egg, imitation crab, cucumbers, and shiitake mushrooms.
The class will be interactive, allowing for hands-on practice in rolling the sushi. We understand that many aspire to master this skill but may struggle with concerns such as ingredients falling out or not getting the rolls quite right. In this class, we will provide comprehensive guidance on proper rolling techniques, creating perfectly seasoned sushi rice, and artfully arranging fillings for beautiful presentations.
Be ready to learn tips and tricks to impress at home!
Crafting Creative Desserts
In addition to the savory sushi rolls, participants will also get their hands dirty creating a fun dessert. You’ll learn to prepare a dessert topped with cream cheese and decorated with chocolate and dried fruits to resemble a playful demon face, embodying the spirit of Setsubun festivities. Not only will you craft two beautiful Ehomaki, but you’ll also leave with two adorable demon-themed treats!
