Lowering the Barriers to Health Consultation for Young People with Phone Scripts

Lowering Health Consultation Barriers for Young Adults in Japan

In an effort to boost the accessibility of health consultations, T-Pec Co., Ltd., based in Tokyo, has launched an initiative specifically aimed at young adults. Coinciding with October's designation as "Phone Health Consultation Awareness Month," T-Pec has collaborated with S.A.L., a recognized student organization from Keio University, to produce a guide titled "First-Time Phone Health Consultation: Your Script."

The motivation behind this project stems from the reality that many young individuals, particularly those in their 20s, often find phone communication to be intimidating. Whether it’s living alone or entering the job market, this demographic faces numerous life challenges that may lead them to feel the need to consult someone about their physical or mental well-being. Unlike other forms of communication, a phone call allows them to connect with a professional immediately, which is invaluable during pressing moments.

To address the discomfort associated with phone calls, university students engaged in discussions focusing on why younger generations feel apprehensive about phone conversations and how to make seeking health advice over the phone feel less daunting. Their brainstorming sessions culminated in the creation of the tri-fold brochure, which not only includes conversational scripts for first-time callers but also addresses prevalent issues in this age group, such as "job-hunting harassment."

A New Perspective on Phone Health Consultations

"Phone Health Consultation Day," established by T-Pec in 2019, will celebrate its seventh anniversary in 2026. This year, the approach shifted to focus on understanding the value of phone consultations through the lens of younger individuals. By partnering with the student-written magazine "Magadipita," this drive encourages discussion about health issues that resonate with the youth.

Student-led brainstorming meetings revealed that while many recognize the benefits of consulting professionals, the high barriers of engaging via phone still persist. A major takeaway was that having a pre-scripted guideline could alleviate the anxiety of deciding what to say, thus making it easier for young adults to make those calls.

The resultant brochure, "First-Time Phone Health Consultation: Your Script," provides users with an easy-to-follow conversation outline along with real scenarios showcasing common reasons for consultation—especially concerning mental health issues that university students face. Elements intended to ease anxieties include responses to common questions like: “Is it okay to bring this up?” and “How should I end the call?”

The Importance of Accessibility in Health Consultation

The brochure is available for free download, allowing young individuals to access the valuable information without barriers. It aims not only to serve as a practical tool but also to serve as a reminder that health consultations can be approachable.

By distilling complex health issues into simplified dialogue through their scripts, the initiative hopes to foster a culture where reaching out for help, no matter how small the problem may seem, is normalized.

Several students involved in the project conveyed their thoughts on the importance of making health consultations accessible. They emphasized how, while many may perceive consultations as reserved for serious issues, smaller concerns can also necessitate professional advice. This shift in perspective is crucial in promoting a holistic approach to health and emphasizes that mental well-being is equally as important as physical health.

The Future of Phone Health Consultations

The partnership between T-Pec and university students represents a pivotal step in bridging gaps in health consultation services for the youth. The brochure will be distributed at various universities, media centers, and libraries throughout Japan, fostering greater awareness of the available resources.

Engaging with young people in such a creative way not only empowers them but also enriches the overall discourse surrounding health in Japan, promoting a proactive attitude towards personal well-being. Both organizations hope that by lowering the barriers to phone consultations, more young adults will feel encouraged to reach out for support whenever they need it.
