On August 2, 2026, South Africa marked a historic milestone with the commercial operation of the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm, the first phase of the nation's largest wind farm cluster. This initiative is a groundbreaking step in South Africa’s Just Energy Transition, underscoring the country's commitment to achieving sustainable energy solutions.

The project, powered by 25 advanced Goldwind GWH182-6.2 MW smart turbines, boasts a total capacity of 155 MW. This makes it one of the largest operational wind facilities in South Africa, with an impressive rotor diameter of 183.5 meters, setting a new standard in wind energy technology across the region.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by key figures including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Chinese Ambassador Wu Peng, and CEOs from pertinent organizations. They gathered to celebrate this achievement, which is seen as vital for advancing South Africa's national sustainable development agenda. President Ramaphosa emphasized the project’s role in steering the nation towards a low-carbon economy, beneficially impacting both the economy and society's long-term health.

The Ummbila wind project is designed as a comprehensive renewable hub that ultimately aims to have a total capacity of 750 MW for wind energy, alongside 150 MW for solar photovoltaic power and 800 MWh of energy storage. The successful launch of Phase One is a precursor to ongoing construction for Phases Two and Three, with full completion anticipated by 2027. This ambitious project aims to become a cornerstone of South Africa’s clean energy transition.

Goldwind, known for its expertise in wind turbine manufacturing, was praised by various leaders for their integral role in this project. The Deputy Chairman and President of Goldwind, Cao Zhigang, highlighted the collaboration with local authorities and acknowledged the project as a significant contributor to the development of infrastructure, job creation, and community upliftment. “Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm Phase One achieving commercial operation ahead of schedule is proof of the trust and open collaboration we have built,” he noted.

Notably, this wind project is the first of its kind within Mpumalanga Province, having successfully passed rigorous grid connection tests. The GWH182-6.2 MW turbines are uniquely engineered to withstand the region’s challenging high-altitude wind conditions and frequent thunderstorms, integrating advanced technologies for optimal operation.

The initial phase of construction generated over 1,200 jobs, with peak employment expectations for the full wind cluster projected to reach approximately 2,000 jobs. The annual energy output is estimated at roughly 480,000 MWh, which could power approximately 500,000 households, significantly reducing carbon emissions by around 400,000 tonnes each year.

Moreover, over 50% of the roles within the wind sector reflect skills transferable from the coal industry, seamlessly facilitating a workforce transition from fossil fuels. Goldwind has proactively established local support structures, including a SCADA monitoring center and a parts hub, ensuring operational efficiency and maintenance is conducted with optimal care.

After entering Africa in 2010, Goldwind has developed an array of projects in South Africa and is on track to surpass 2.2 GW of installed capacity by the second quarter of 2027. With the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Farm leading the way, South Africa not only advances its renewable energy capabilities but also strengthens its international sustainability commitments.
