The
Visual Industry Promotion Organization (VIPO) is thrilled to announce a two-day
Film Screenwriting Workshop focused on the development of exceptional film projects. To be held on
October 6-7, 2025, this workshop aims to provide invaluable insights and practical skills for film producers, screenwriters, and production staff.
Workshop Overview
Participants are encouraged to submit their original film project proposals ahead of the event. Note that if the number of applicants exceeds the limit, selection will occur.
Objectives
1. Understand the critical role of screenwriting in filmmaking.
2. Learn how to transform a core film concept into a compelling screenplay.
Themes
- - Participants will refine their original film project proposals submitted in advance.
- - Strategies for crafting an engaging story from concept to script.
- - Techniques for improving project proposals to prepare them for screenwriting.
Curriculum Highlights
- - Each participant must submit an A4-sized document (one page) containing their original film project proposal. The length should be around 1,000 characters, including details about the project's intention and synopsis.
- - Receive guidance on your proposal from instructor Masato Kato.
- - Attend lectures on motifs and brainstorming as well as themes and loglines.
- - Participate in group discussions to enhance all project proposals.
Please Note: Curriculum content is subject to change. A networking event is scheduled for the second day after the conclusion of the workshop, allowing participants to socialize with the instructor and fellow attendees. Participation is optional but encouraged!

- - Target Audience: Open to screenwriters, film producers, film staff, and aspiring industry professionals
- - Capacity: 12 participants (pre-registration required with project proposal selection)
- - Registration Deadline: September 16, 2025, at noon

Masato Kato is a distinguished screenwriter known for his engaging body of work, including films like:
- - “Yuki ni Negau Koto” (2006) - Winner of the Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix at the 18th Tokyo International Film Festival.
- - “Climbers High” (2008) - Winner of the Excellent Screenplay at the 32nd Japan Academy Awards.
