Employment Trends Indicate Fragility

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that, while some restaurant segments added jobs recently, the overall trend remains concerning. For instance, eating and drinking establishments saw an uptick of 11,000 jobs in August 2025, yet this period followed two months of virtually no job growth. The hospitality sector has hired over 800,000 workers in recent months, reflecting high demand for labor. In stark contrast, some states like Massachusetts and West Virginia are lagging behind, showing decreases of 4-5% relative to pre-pandemic staffing.

Economic constraints will likely lead to considerable drops in consumer spending, particularly in regions with a high concentration of government workers who may find themselves temporarily unemployed.
