Understanding Milk Oligosaccharides



Milk oligosaccharides are functional carbohydrates derived from lactose, characterized by their resistance to degradation by human digestive enzymes. This means they can reach the large intestine intact, where they nourish beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria. Due to its impressive nutritional profile—including vital vitamins, minerals, and immunological support factors—camel milk is considered a valuable nutritional resource in many cultures worldwide.

Despite the increasing popularity of camel milk as an alternative to cow’s milk and human breast milk, academic research on its functional components, particularly oligosaccharides, remains limited in Japan. This gap created a compelling opportunity for Health BASE and Toyo University’s School of Environmental and Food Science led by Professor Nobumitsu Miyanishi.

Project Overview



The upcoming research, titled “Comprehensive Analysis of Camel Milk Oligosaccharides,” aims to document the characteristics and functional potential of various oligosaccharides found in camel milk. Over a set period from June 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, the study will assess the structural features and nutritional applications of these oligosaccharides. With the support of Professor Miyanishi, who has extensive expertise in the field of glycobiology, the research team seeks to establish scientific evidence regarding the health benefits of camel milk.

The collaborative efforts bring together diverse samples of camel milk, including seven varieties from the dromedary camel and six from the Bactrian camel. Detailed analyses will proceed systematically within the specified timeline, contributing to a better understanding of camel milk’s potential as a functional food ingredient.
