Wildcat Midstream Begins Expansion of Helper Terminal
In an exciting development for the oil industry, Wildcat Midstream has initiated the expansion of its terminal located in Helper, Utah. The project aims to significantly enhance the export capabilities of the Uinta Basin's distinctive wax crude oil, commonly referred to for its unique yellow and black characteristics.
Currently, the Helper terminal possesses a loading capacity of 42,000 barrels per day. The expansion project is being conducted in two phases. The first phase is set to become operational by July 2025 and will elevate the loading capacity to 66,000 barrels daily. Following this, the second phase, anticipated for completion in late spring 2026, will further augment capacity to approximately 140,000 barrels per day. To facilitate this substantial growth, Wildcat Midstream has acquired an expansive 422 acres of land north of its existing facility in Helper.
Demand for Unique Wax Crude Oil
Jim Finley, a partner at Wildcat Midstream, highlighted the increased demand for their waxy crude oil due to its numerous advantageous properties. The crude oil contains a high level of middle distillates such as diesel and jet fuel. Additionally, its low sulfur content plays a crucial role in reducing refining costs and diminishing environmental impact. The oil's relatively light composition makes processing simpler, and the paraffin content is particularly well-suited for producing lubricants and various wax-based products. Even with specialized transportation and heated storage requirements, the pricing of this unique crude oil remains competitive.
Logistical Services
Wildcat Midstream stands out in the Uinta Basin as the only full-service terminal operator. The company offers producers a comprehensive suite of logistical services that includes trucking, railcar loading, rail leasing, and sales to the ultimate market from the wellhead to the railhead.
“Our long-term agreements solidify our position in the Uinta Basin and foster expanded access to broader markets,” stated Finley. These agreements facilitate collaborations with a Class 1 rail carrier and the largest rail offloading terminal in Louisiana, as well as commitments for wax sales with highly-regarded refiners located in the Gulf Coast. These partnerships are further supported by collaborations with key producers in the Uinta Basin.
Economic Impact and Future Vision
The expansion of the Helper terminal marks a noteworthy milestone in Wildcat Midstream’s overarching mission. The company is dedicated to supporting both the oil producers in the region and the local communities within Utah through sustainable growth and the creation of long-term value. Finley emphasized that this expansion will bring about positive economic benefits relating to the Ute Indian Tribe, Carbon County, and the State of Utah.
Founded in 2018, Wildcat Midstream has become a pivotal player in Utah's oil sector. Its operations encompass 14 transloaders, alongside a fleet of 1,309 rail cars and three locomotives, all managed by a dedicated workforce of 43 employees based in both Carbon County, Utah, and Fort Worth, Texas.
