CME Group Introduces New Eris SOFR Swap Options Set for Launch in June

CME Group Set to Launch Eris SOFR Swap Options

On April 14, 2026, the CME Group, the prominent leader in the global derivatives marketplace, revealed plans to roll out options based on Eris SOFR Swap futures. The launch is anticipated on June 16, 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. This new offering aims to provide market participants a powerful tool for managing U.S. dollar interest rate risks more flexibly.

Agha Mirza, the Global Head of Rates and OTC Products at CME Group, highlighted how these options will complement the robust existing suite of interest rate products, enhancing liquidity, improving price transparency, and maximizing margin efficiencies for clients across the globe.

Michael Riddle, the CEO of Eris Innovations, emphasized the advantages of Eris SOFR Swap options for institutional investors. These options will help them manage risk more accurately, especially when navigating different expectations regarding U.S. interest rate movements. The options replicate the design of forward-premium OTC swaptions, thereby offering benefits like cost optimization and improved trading simplicity amid evolving economic landscapes.

Don Wilson, CEO of DRW and co-developer of Eris's innovative technology, explained how Eris sought to rethink the accessibility of swap spread risks by combining the nuanced approaches of OTC markets with the efficiencies associated with futures. The unique characteristics of this product have already garnered significant adoption among diverse market participants. The introduction of options is expected to empower even more advanced risk management strategies while maintaining the liquidity and capital advantages that underline the substantial growth of Eris SOFR Swap futures.

Regarding the client base, Jeff Bauman, Senior VP of Fixed Income at R.J. O'Brien Associates, noted a strong demand for options over SOFR swap rates. He believes that the introduction of Eris SOFR Swap options will enable clients to skillfully manage portfolio convexity and offer an efficient, capital-friendly extension to their risk management strategies available through CME Group.

As the leader in interest rate markets, CME Group provides an extensive range of futures and options covering various benchmark products, including U.S. Treasuries, SOFR, and other key financial instruments. Since the Eris SOFR Swap futures debut in October 2020, over ten million contracts have traded on the platform. Recent statistics from March 2026 indicated that Eris SOFR Swap futures achieved a remarkable open interest of 707,000 contracts, equivalent to a staggering $71 billion in notional value, along with a single-day trading record of 299,513 contracts on March 10.

Eris SOFR Swap futures, designed to replicate cash flows associated with interest rate swaps, are well-positioned to integrate with standard exchange-traded instruments. The forthcoming options will include 2-year, 5-year, and 10-year Eris SOFR Swap futures. This suite will provide advanced hedging strategies, particularly useful for managing non-linear risks found in mortgage-backed portfolios.

Additionally, these new options will qualify for margin offsets with other cleared interest rate futures at CME Group, subject to the regulatory rules set forth by the CBOT. Investment options and detailed information about the products will be available on the CME Group's official website.

CME Group stands as a pivotal force in the derivatives world, enabling clients to participate in diverse markets ranging from futures and options to cash and OTC offerings. The efficient management of risk and the capture of emerging opportunities are essential components of CME Group's vision as it continues to facilitate global trading.
